Check out the early 90's documentary "Dream Decievers" on google video for the whole story. Rob Halford actually sings in court acapella (no lie), they interview the surviving kid after reconstructive surgery (though he later killed himself), the parents, it's an excellent watch. |

While all of the above interpretations are quite valid, including class divisions, feeling second-rate, and false appearances, there is one other interpretation yet to be mentioned. At its deepest level, this song IMO is about the Oedipal complex and how we seek mates that are similar to our parents. Substitute me for him - you'll settle for second best too Substitute my coke for gin - I'll settle for something other than what I want I substitute you for my mum - self-explanatory At least I'll get my washing done - maybe things will work out better with my substitute parent |
