| Roger Waters – Bird in a Gale Lyrics | 2 years ago |
| Most of my adult life I've felt like a stick in a fast flowing stream. I've got no control, I'm just bouncing along being thudded against rocks, getting stuck in eddies, swamped by waves, just going along. | |
| Roger Waters – Broken Bones Lyrics | 2 years ago |
| I think the main takeaway in this song is that no one is born with hatred, distrust, and prejudice in their hearts. These are things taught to us, or brainwashed into us, by religion, politics and geography, but predominantly religion. If we all had the purity of a new born baby then there wouldn't be any wars or hatred or racism. Society gives us these things, but it's all bullshit and lies.....and we have a choice to believe or not. | |
| Roger Waters – Picture That Lyrics | 2 years ago |
| I think there's also a literal sense to this song in that Roger is making us see images of people around the world doing people things, just minding their own business, setting us up for the images of how conflict somewhere affects us and our lives. | |
| Roger Waters – When We Were Young Lyrics | 2 years ago |
|
One of the lyrics sites has the other 2 repeated spoken lines as: (Trunks, dripping slowly into the gutter and the floor. Canopy's stretched black...) and (You could, I could, it's invisible...) I can't figure out the meaning of these. "Canopy's stretched black sounds like "can of piss stretched black" and the second line to me sounds like "(You could, I could, that is a ball...) Either way, I've got no idea. But I think the overall message of this weird album intro is that we're just human compete with our flaws, and as adults we're still flawed and broken. Life doesn't make sense. |

| Roger Waters – Part of Me Died Lyrics | 3 years ago |
| We all have something bad inside us. We are all capable of doing bad things in this world but most of us don't do any of these things. Waters is saying that when he laid eyes on the perfect woman, the "right one", then that evil or bad part that was lying dormant in him was thus gone. She brought the best out of him and made him a better human. | |

| Mercury Rev – In a Funny Way Lyrics | 5 years ago |
| When I hear this song, I don't know if it's my desire for lyrics to mean something more than the old boy/girl relationship thing, but it seems to me that the "her" in this song could be that intangible thing "home" that is so important to our psyche. Or it could even refer to mother earth or the environment. But I'm not sure, I just like songs to mean something more than just "love and marriage" stuff. | |
| Editors – Escape the Nest Lyrics | 6 years ago |
|
I agree with infinityontrial regarding the theme of working like ants in a nest and time is getting away from you. I'm not sure about the third person (dear & love). I just don't think this song feels right with a girlfriend/love interest being that person. I feel it's more an inspiring platonic friend, or perhaps even humankind as a whole who is inspiring the singer to think about what else there is. "buildings in clouds" has got me befuddled. Perhaps he works in the city (skyscrapers appear to reach the clouds when you look up). |

| Paul Kelly – God Told Me To Lyrics | 7 years ago |
|
Bravo Mr Kelly. A song that describes the ridiculousness and utter wrongness of attributing one's actions to belief in an invisible mythical being and excusing those actions because this higher power told him / her to do it. |
|
| Dragon – Dreams Of Ordinary Men Lyrics | 7 years ago |
|
I agree with DanDManner. I think he's stuck in his place in life and knows there is more but like the fly being drawn to the web, he can't make the change because he can't create the dream. I think that the "you" in verse 3 is probably life. He thought that his life would be bigger, better, more fulfilling but that deception came from within. Life never told him that was going to happen. |

| Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark – Joan of Arc Lyrics | 8 years ago |
|
Joan Of Arc. Little catholic girl is fallin' in love A face on a page, a gift from above She should've known better than to give her heart She should've known better than to ever part without me, without me I gave her everything that I ever owned I think she understood it but she never spoke She shouldn't oughta try to be that way She shouldn't have to go there every day without me, without me Now listen to us good and listen well Listen to us all and everything we tell We should've known better than to give her away We should've known better to this very day, without me, without me Listen Joan of Arc, all you gotta do Say the right words and I'll be coming through Hold you in my arms and take you right away Now she's turned away to another land We never understood it why she gave her hand She shouldn't oughta promise, cause it's just pretend I know she doesn't mean it and she'll leave again without me, without me Without me, without me |

| Moby – Slipping Away Lyrics | 9 years ago |
|
I always thought the 2 lines were; "singing a song when I can't really sing, hoping the song will at least look at me" Moby isn't the greatest singer in the world but he does it, he has a go and he hopes that the song will reciprocate and hold him up, hold his voice and carry the meaning and joy regardless. Even though it seems I got the words wrong, it still seems to fit. |

| Of Monsters And Men – Wolves Without Teeth Lyrics | 9 years ago |
| I'm getting an angle of being afraid of something that is harmless, even good. Possibly the love of someone but I'm searching for a more metaphorical meaning. Many people are scared of commitment or relationships when they just shouldn't be. | |

| David Gilmour – The Blue Lyrics | 10 years ago |
|
This song conjures up images and memories of my youth: sitting on the grassy dune with my surfboard in front of me, watching the surf, watching the tide, counting sets and waves and timing their intervals, studying where the rips are forming and dying, visualising the shape of the sand banks by the way the waves break with the swell direction. Blue sky above, blue water beyond. Sitting there with all the time in the world, relaxed, non-stressed, enjoying being 15, taking in my surroundings. |

| The Angels (AU) – No Secrets Lyrics | 11 years ago |
|
Amanda the actress waits at the station She's drifting with nothing to do With dilettante steps she's quick to accept The weather and times turning screw She lives in a tower armed with defenses She learned from her mother and friends She walks like a pharaoh, dresses in day-glo When she's in pain she pretends... That late in the night when the lights are all out Then she slips off her stockings and shoes She makes you her lover and lets you discover The smiles she keeps, she keeps for you She keeps no, she keeps no She keeps no secrets from you Facing the morning, wearing her shadow She throws her dice and I-ching Success in Japan, a rescuing man Knows she won't change anything `Cause late in the night when the lights are all out She slips off her stockings and shoes She makes you her lover and lets you discover The smiles she keeps, she keeps for you She keeps no, she keeps no She keeps no secrets from you She keeps no secrets from you She keeps no secrets from you She keeps no secrets from you Can you please tell me what the time is? |

| Thanks MistahBungle. What do you think the first line refers to? And I'm trying to find out about the coke bottle rumour and the only other person referenced seems to be Diesel. | |
| The Church – The Unguarded Moment Lyrics | 12 years ago |
|
I kind of agree with remarcsd except that I don't think it's based on a boy/girl relationship of love. I think it's more generally about derision from others, bullying perhaps. And how this kind of negative behaviour only serves to make the person stronger after he gets over the "shrinking" and feeling like dying. The "cameras for eyes" line intrigues me. Does it refer to paparazzi perhaps with their cameras always up to their eyes, thus implying that the singer is a celebrity? Or does it refer to the way that a "bully" (for want of a better term) looks at you and their eyes seem to be taking a snapshot of you as if they're more focused on their target for derision than on more important things? The second line in each stanza that refers to the second person; "I knew you'd find me...", I think this 2nd person is more a generalised "other person" or other people. Perhaps friends, family or the song's audience even. I don't get the feeling that this person is the ex lover of the singer. Rifles for minds, horses for hearts, cameras for eyes. Awesome metaphors. |

| Sigur Rós – Dauðalogn Lyrics | 12 years ago |
|
This song is so beautiful. When the angelic operatic voice comes in, I get goose bumps. It's so moving. The translated lyrics are pretty straightforward. The narrator is alone, sitting just taking in the beauty of nature and the Earth, enjoying peace. I'm not sure what the morning brings to change it, but the operatic voice makes me think of the wonder of the morning sun bringing a new day. |
|
| Sigur Rós – Dauðalogn Lyrics | 12 years ago |
|
The world very silent The air does not move Sound of grave silence There is no one awake There is no rapid tempo Total dead calm Inwards I think Embers light a bonfire One with myself Breathe in breathe out The expanse is open For travellers and I Fill the mountain range Cliffs echo Echo in our heads Outside it's dead calm Inwards I think Embers light a bonfire One with myself Now I sit on firm ground The morning arrives With its calm against the storm And now the surfaces ripple And now we break the dead calm. |

| Pink Floyd – Coming Back to Life Lyrics | 12 years ago |
| By that principle you should only like the original Pink Floyd. Actually by your very own principle you should only like Sigma 6. Because any change in the lineup of a band should be met with hostility towards the band's fans. | |
| Pink Floyd – Coming Back to Life Lyrics | 12 years ago |
| One does not simply use sms abbreviations when discussing Pink Floyd. | |
| Pink Floyd – Coming Back to Life Lyrics | 12 years ago |
| Exactly right, but the betrayal felt was not felt by the singer / narrator but by the third person, Syd, and yet sung in first person as if the narrator now understands and feels the betrayal from all those years ago. | |
| Bob Marley and the Wailers – I Shot The Sheriff Lyrics | 12 years ago |
| I think there's something about honesty and truth in justice in this song. he seems to be saying "Don't blame me for what I haven't done. Even if what I'm truthfully confessing to is the worse offense. Blame me for that but not for what I haven't done." | |
| New Order – We All Stand Lyrics | 13 years ago |
|
I don't know if New Order intended some figurative meaning by the soldier but maybe this song is very literal. The first person is a soldier in the back of a troop carrier with 3 miles to go to the front line. At the front line is an unknown enemy soldier with, in a sense, the same 3 miles to go before confrontation and one will shoot the other. Perhaps it's a comment about war, about sending soldiers out from both sides to meet at some pre-ordained place to try to shoot each other. |

| Devo – Whip It Lyrics | 13 years ago |
|
Some people have touched on the meaning but don't seem to understand metaphors. It is simply about getting off your arse, stop putting things off and start doing things. How often do you hear someone say "Well I better get cracking." That's what "crack that whip means". No more talk, no more procrastination... just do it. Before the cream sits out too long is a metaphor for waiting too long to do something. You keep waiting and waiting for the motivation and you wait too long and miss the moment, or the thing you should have done no longer matters and you just sat on your arse doing nothing. There's no masturbation, no bondage, no S&M. Oh by the way, they weren't flower pots on their heads, they were energy domes. |

| Neil Young – Such a Woman Lyrics | 14 years ago |
| I chose this song to play for my wife-to-be to walk out to at our wedding. It was outdoors under a garden arch thingy and she was beautiful and such a woman to me. Our love will live until the end of time and no one else feels like this. At least, that's how it feels to me but of course many other people do. | |
