In keeping with the parallels with The Odyssey, this could also be from the point of view of Poseidon, about his animosity toward Odysseus. |

I agree, what does it matter whether this refers to a specific historical event? The words and music together tell a vivid story of vengeance and atonement. Just listen to the emotion in his voice when he sings "You haven't met me, I am the only son." The first time, there is so much vitriol, anger, and hatred as he faces his oppressor. There's almost a sense of surprise at himself in the tone. Then, when he repeats the line at the end of the song, he is quite and remorseful. "So collect your courage and collect your horse/And pray you never feel this same kind of remorse" sums up the entirety of the story told in the song. |

As someone with schizophrenia, this rather reminds me of my struggles with the illness. 'Blue Pastures' oddly sounds like the name of a mental hospital or rest home. In the first verse, he's been discharged, but starts to decompensate again. "Just when I thought I was free, I got pulled in again/Once you're in, you're in" sounds like the episodic nature of the illness.
The second verse sounds like he's having another episode ("blue pastures calling home..."), and is considering suicide, because he shouldn't have to keep suffering just because his loved ones don't want to be without him ("I don't see why I'm obliged to just carry on"). He eventually accepts that this is how things are, and in the final verse, perhaps has taken his medication in the hospital and drifts off to sleep. |

For some reason, the lyrics remind me of the life of the narrator in Fight Club before he meets Tyler Durden. Constant travel and work without the stability of a home is wearing him down. The music is rather slow and hypnotic, almost monotonous, except the little guitar flourishes. |

Reminds me of the loneliness after having a big fight with your significant other, and they've gone to a friend or parent's house to stay while things cool down. What makes it more bitter, is that you know you were wrong, and fought anyway. You don't recognize yourself as the person you were when you met. And there's the fear that everyone knows you were wrong, and will side with the other person. Still, you miss them and you're hoping you can work things out in the end. |

I'd go further and interpret it as being about Jesus. The lines about his pick-up truck could be a reference to carpentry. "The psychics gathered all around and said I lied" definitely sounds like a reference to the Pharisees. Makes sense in the context of a lot of his other lyrics having religious themes, especially on the first, self-titled album. |
