Tegan and Sara – Where Does the Good Go Lyrics 14 years ago
This song is pretty obviously a breakup song... but I really think whats important about it is that it is reflecting on a relationship, all of which have both good and bad parts, and wondering literally where all the good things go when its over. After a breakup, especially if 2 people really loved each other, they tend to HATE each other and feel really bitter. where does the good go? how can you love someone and then after you break up can there be so much ugliness?
More importantly, i think the song is about that moment when your partner fully resolves that its over, especially when you haven't.

"look me in the heart and unbreak broken, it wont happen
its love that leaves and breaks the seal"

in my experience, theres this moment when you break up with someone you love and have been dating for years, and after all the fights you've had you never actually expect the other person to finally decide that it's over. You just want to make up like you do every other time you fight. But something has changed in their heart- the love has left and no matter how much you beg them to to forgive you or get over it like every time... something has changed and you have to accept that for them, it's over.

Tegan and Sara – I Know I Know I Know Lyrics 14 years ago
This song is probably about long distance relationships but to me it's about someone you're with everyday. When you're apart, even for short weekends or something, you always fight ("from hundreds of miles you cry like a baby you plead with me shout scream tell me i'm staying") and yet since you're together so much of the time it gets kind of mundane ("house after house you see car after car..). Sometimes you feel like you're faking it, but thats the last thing you want to be doing. you have to keep reassuring yourself that this is the person you love and should be with. ("i know i know i know what else are we here for?") it's like you take someone for granted and you have to remind yourself how much you love each other. "it's just this day..." is like reminding yourself that you're in it for the long haul and have a great love even if some days you feel discontented. "stick your hands inside my pockets, keep them warm while I'm still here.." sometimes you feel a sense of impermanence.. you want to be there for the person you love while you stick around... but at the same time you're so screwed up.. why else do you need to keep reassuring yourself? yup.

Tegan and Sara – Walking with a Ghost Lyrics 14 years ago
To me, this song is about moving on from being with someone who isn't "there" with you, meaning you're in a relationship with them but they're not putting their heart in it the way you are. you're walking with a ghost. yet, they won't let you go. They "insist" on being with you, they drag it out and keep you with them. they run hot and cold, they "stay" and "go". Its almost like they aren't into you the way you are into them, yet they don't want to let you go either. Finally, you end it... and even though they keep using their old tricks to try to keep you with them, you're done. or at least, you're trying to assure yourself that you're done..

Tegan and Sara – The Con Lyrics 14 years ago
I could see how this song may be about cheating... but it has a different personal meaning to me.
I think it's about breaking up with (dumping) someone that you do love.. "I am moving past this, giving notice," is trying to tell someone that it's over.. you feel guilty. "I have to go, yes I know the feeling, know you're leaving.." the breakup isn't actually mutual, but as you tell the other person your feelings, they indicate that they feel the same way to save their pride.
"spelled out your name and list the reasons.." is about making a list of pros/cons to be with someone. this isn't an easy breakup... have to spend a million hours thinking about what to do... because the relationship is SAFE. you love each other, but it just isn't what you need anymore.
My favorite part: "i'm capsized, staring on the edge of safe" you are completely broken and torn up. you have a choice between safe and easy but you're completely wrecked and you can't go on in this "safe" relationship.
You feel so guilty that you "really like to cry" ... i know in situations like these you can feel so numb about the whole situation, you want to cry.. maybe then the person you are breaking up with won't hate you so much.
"encircle me, i need to be taken down.." maybe you want the person to stop you. it's so scary to leave. and you love the person so much. you're conflicted. this song means a lot to me.

Tegan and Sara – Nineteen Lyrics 14 years ago
To me, this song is about looking back on your first great love. They will always have a place in your heart... but you were young.. and you have since moved on and away. ("flew home back to where we met") Part of the song is reliving how you left and moved on... said goodbye to something that was once so important to you on your path to growing up. In many ways, you're still insecure about what you had back then, wondering if it had the same importance in their life as yours. But you've grown up. You don't even know the person anymore ("I feel you in my heart, and I don't even know you") You know that you've changed so much, and they have too. Part of you wants to reconnect, but the other (larger?) part of you knows that who you were back then was so different than you are now. You've changed so much from the scared girl who clung to someone because she felt so alone... I know I have. This song is absolutely beautiful and it means so much to me. To me, it is about looking back on the journey to where you are now... and wondering about someone who was once so important in your life. Also, wondering if it was ever real, or if you were too young and too screwed up when you still lived in your hometown to have anything real.
