| Elbow – Switching Off Lyrics | 11 years ago |
| Spot on I think. The last of men in hats is Guy's Grandad - Ted. Its Ted's last memories as he dies - when he was a young falling in love in June with a wireless playing. He choose this special memory and now it is playing back now in is brain ("the reign of sparks") | |

All good points. Some other things which struck me "The ticker take tangles my feet as I search for a face that I know". A ticker tape parade as people shower acclaim on him but it could make him trip him. He looks around but there is no one that really matters in the crowd, they are just hangers on. Makes me think about someone who has associates who all think he's a great bloke - maybe people in the pub - but the reality is that he's lonely and the people that really matter are distant. |

| An old and angry man sitting a pub drinking hard. Young people are all around. He is invisible to them and he resents this. Don't they know who he is and the life he has experienced. He has stories to tell so they should sit with him and give him the time of day. | |
| Elbow – New York Morning Lyrics | 11 years ago |

I think the lyric is "modern rome" not "modern road". Modern Rome means centre of the world. Giddy Aunt is an old fashioned expression which is used as an exclamation - a quaint version of OMG. "Where folk are nice to Yoko" refers to the fact that John Lennon was hounded out of the UK and moved to NY as the press were mean to his wife. NY adopted them as their own and they are symbols of NY. |

| Agree its "Down of eider" which probably means Eiderdown which is an old word for a bed covering or duvet. | |

Verse 5 is all about growing old together, his mind has raced ahead. When my face is chamois-creased - When I am old and full wrinkles If you think I wink I did - older working class northern men wink at people as a sign of affection Laugh Politely at Repeats - Older people sitting in together the evening watching repeated sit-coms on TV Kiss me when my lips are thin - A sign of ageing |

Good comments - He's looking back and realising that anything was possible then before life's big choices have yet to be made. Don't waste these times - you can do anything if you want - Build a Rocket - do something extraordinary with your life and don't waste it. Some of the sentinment here is also in Jesus is a Rochdale Girl - where he talks about what lies ahead and choices yet to me made. |

| Elbow – The Fix Lyrics | 14 years ago |
|
I think "the saddles are loaded, the mickeys are slipped" means that the other horses and had extra weight put into their saddles and the stable lads, who are often Irish (micks = mickeys) been bribed (slipped cash). Pegasus pills could mean steroids or just mean that the horse is almost fast enough to fly (Pegasus = flying horse) The snaps of the stewards so candid - suggests that the officials are in on the fix as well Penguins and pearls - dinner suits and smart dresses for the ladies. Donahue Sisters - is the name of a play set in Ireland by Gerald Aron. No obviously connection but keeps with the Irish theme |
