Project 86 – Say Goodnight To The Bad Guy Lyrics 12 years ago
Even though I can see the arguments against, and feel that song's largely should be about what the listener gets out of the experience of listening it, I feel that Andrew wrote this with Christ's death on the cross in mind.

The lyrics are full or references. "Now here I lie in the streets" Before Jesus carried his cross he was severely maimed and injured and tortures. The journey carrying his cross no doubt had him collapsing often "The village" being the onlookers and "the vultures" being Christ's persecutors, the will of Satan picking him apart as they mocked him.

I feel the chorus is very similar to Jesus saying that eternal life belongs to all those who taste his Holy Spirit and make it their own.

"The children fiend for the spoils, divide what remains".. I think refers to true Christians eager to take Christ's spirit into themselves and share in his glory, an honour that could only be granted through Christ spilling his blood in the desert on that day. "Gash below the waist" referring to Christ's body being punctured as he died on the cross, the "Milk" being Christ's ultimate gift.

But now comes the confusing part... why would Christ say the milk is curdled. Andrew very often writes about mediocrity and apathy and falseness. I feel this is Andrew's way of saying those who "drank" the milk and proclaimed they took on the Holy Spirit falsely, will not share in God's glory... the milk will curdle because God isn't alive within them.

Just for a minute pretend in this illusion", the illusion being the falseness of their Christianity. Christ saying that His friendship is the most precious gift ever given, and all we need to do is take him in "Such a bargain". But for those who do not take him in, the serum will go sour.. the cure to death and the key to eternal life will not belong to them.

And so we say goodbye to the bad guy, Satan defeated through Christ's sacrifice... but the only way you will share in the victory, is by truly drinking him in and embracing new life

Mark Knopfler – Speedway At Nazareth Lyrics 12 years ago
That is a very very beautiful interpretation of the metaphorical side of the song! I couldnt agree more!
One thing I would personally add, is that end destination "Nazareth". I think it's a metaphor for heaven (As Nazareth has a biblical connotation as well).

In light of that I feel that the song talks about how people chase after happiness all their lives, how they feel that happiness can only be obtained by racing harder and harder to get success in the eyes of the world... where, in my opinion anyways, true happiness is only found when you reach heaven on earth (God's presence in your life).

Like I said, this is what I take away from the song. Absolutely amazing how Knopfler can extract so much feeling and symbolism, never mind the fact that the guitar work itself tells a story all of its own!

Mark Knopfler – Prairie Wedding Lyrics 12 years ago
@daveandqin, it's definitely a Knopfler song (Sailing to Philadelphia was released in 2000 where as Rogers covered it in 2003).

As for the meaning... this is definitely the song I'm going to be playing at my wedding.

Me and my girlfriend met each other over facebook for the first time. Not with the intention of getting a girlfriend that way, but as things happen, we got to know each other and grew as friends, and eventually after three months we started dating (me living in Australia and her living in South Africa). We were dating for 6months before I saw her in person for the first time....

I find it hard to describe it better than "I couldn't think of what I should say, but when Adam saw Eve in the garden, I believe he felt the self same way".... I KNEW that first moment she was MADE for me!!

We've been going out for two and a half years now, and I'm planning on asking for her hand in marriage as soon as possible.

Anyways, my story aside, I think this song is about a man living in the old west of America, where quite often cowboys and ranchers would live a days journey at least from the nearest town(drove up to the home trail), and often live in isolation(I know it ain't much, it needs a woman's touch). He might have met this girl on his travels as he drove cattle, and started writing her (only knew each other by letter), till she moved to be with him. He asks her if he is what she hoped he would be, as he already knew from the first moment he saw her that she was the Eve to his Adam. He wants to spend his life with her, loving her. And for as long as he lives, he'll never be able to believe that she chose him (I say do you really love me Mary, I hold her and I whisper her name).

Well that's my interpretation. Sorry for the long winded message but I created an account SPECIFICALLY to write this haha!! Truly a song that will always be dear to my heart.
