Steely Dan – Your Gold Teeth Lyrics 6 years ago
Love the comments here: My analysis/synthesis: The singer occasionally frequents a high-stakes underground gambling ring in Chinatown Chicago. There a Monkey woman (see Chinese zodiac), likely an escapee of the Great Chinese Famine, walks the killing floor looking for gambling winners. Her "gamble" is whether she can seduce them starting with a smile (throw out your gold teeth). After she's gotten them in bed, she then starts her "dance", using sex with manipulative and torturous mindgames to tie them down as her sugar daddy. He wonders if she seduces them one-by-one or juggles multiple Johns. She does this to survive and perhaps pay off gambling or drug debts. He has been through all this before, but will not be trapped this time. He coolly analyzes her and calls out her harsh interior (iron and brass) which she sees in the mirror... but he wont fall for it... this time. Let me hold the door for you.

Steely Dan – The Royal Scam Lyrics 14 years ago
A Puerto Rican couple, or perhaps young family, leave San Juan to NYC in hopes of the American Dream.
End up living in or near a black ghetto in overcrowded conditions
One of them begins a heroin addiction.
Ashamed to tell the truth, they write home with the same lies of riches that brought them there, perpeutating the cycle.

This is the most transparent and simple song on The Royal Scam album -- both lyrically and musically.

The first six songs on the Royal Scam album bounce between phenomenal and timeless -- the last three songs taper off, reaching mediocrity with this tune. But I gotta say there is not a bad song on any Steely Dan album before Gaucho.

Steely Dan – Dont Take Me Alive Lyrics 14 years ago
The durable one gives the obvious, superficial interpretation of the lyrics. But I can't shake the feeling that there's something else hidden in there -- perhaps some double meaning of the term "Bookkeeper's son", perhaps a clue given by "no red light flashing" -- another phrase that seems misplaced if it is simply meant to describe his newly discovered lack of conscience. I'm still not completely satisfied.

Steely Dan – Haitian Divorce Lyrics 14 years ago
Loupgarous -- Steely Dan lyrics are loaded with double entendre and veiled references. A banana is never just a banana for them. I agree with previous posts that there are two expedient unilateral divorces in the song. They both are expedient, unilateral, yet executed by two different "papas".

Look up the word "double entendre" in the dictionary. This song is one of Dan's classic examples of it.

Steely Dan – Green Earrings Lyrics 14 years ago
This song is about a rapist. The images that remain with him are what he sees during his crime -- the earrings and the expression in her eyes. Very disturbing song, once you get it.
