I feel like this song is about life in general, although, as many folks here have noted, it can be an adjustable meaning. I first heard this song at age 10. It sounded so serious to me. And it is still a serious song, the emotion it promotes. When I was a kid and heard the song, I thought it said "I'm thinking of dying, on the side, Hey!" I thought it was about a depressed man who was starting to think of suicide.

So this song is about beinging your life (my life) knowing that "I" have only just begun. And the romantic connotations translated to me as someone who is intellectually interpreting realty a best they can. Everything in the song that has to do with taling it over with another person is just a way of saying "to think about something alone for the benifit of yourself, and harming no one. Just begun. I kiss for luck and I'm on my way.
