This song is about artist Mario Schifano - very famous Italian artist who hung out with the Stones in the 60’s and even stole Jaggers girlfriend Marianne (un)Faithful. He was a known drug user and spent a lot of time in NY in the 60’s. I’m a cold Italian pizza, I could use a lemon squeezer. |

@[joestrummersgirl:30800] this feels like a combative response to something heartfelt I posted 6 yrs ago, so let me point out anyone who thinks dying at 50 isn’t taken away too early must have youth and naivety on their side. I assume someone that names themselves after said singer understands that he struggled with leaving London for the suburbs, but did so for his children. Quite simply the proof is in the lyrics - he’s alive and that’s all that matters to him. When you have the clarity to come to that realization, it indeed means, you’re at peace. |

@[Ritzytrailer:19064] well I wouldn't "trust" that Butler is a gay brother too since he's married to Annie for many years and has a daughter. |

@[LolaBat:19061] well actually he died from a heart attack. Which was most likely due to his addictions to pills, alcohol and various physical ailments he was dealing with. The most important and underated actor of the 20th century. He leaves only 17 films but they are a precious treasure everyone should check out. |

@[kittenangel:19058] The lyrics are really ambigous in my opinion. however i liike the fact that "we wait for morning to wake you" can be taken two ways... the other being we wait for mourning to wake you--as when someone passes is the only real time we think about death and how much time we have left...we need to wake up. |

Though many people misconstrue this song as a love song to England it is in fact not. Strummer was anti patriotism. This song is about racism, disillusionment, anti aggressive foreign policy, not conforming (grabbing the dangling carrot) and please fix the whole second verse which is completely wrong. Strummer cited this as the last great Clash song and I have to agree. The conviction in the way he sings this song is what I miss most about Strummer. A true poet. godspeed. |

Well it's a lot more than just visiting his drug dealer. He is walking through his old neighborhood reminiscing. "thought about my babies grown, thought about going home, thought about what's done is done, we're alive and that's the one" he's letting go of all the crap in the past and enjoying being in the here and now.
So sad. I choke up when I hear this song. Seems he had reached the point where he was at peace with himself only to be taken too early.

There was a video on youtube of the furs doing this live acoustic version of this and so many people were commenting how Richard's vocals sucked, how he was terrible, how he was off key. And I just thought you a-holes, listen to what he is singing, you are the ones he is singing about. The tight-assed little scaredy cats stuck in their one dimensional box. That is what this song is about and everyone here has touched on that in some way. |

Quite simple and very poignant. Deborah is singing about being that girl from NJ looking over and being seduced by the NYC skyline...big city dreams. Power, passion plays a doublehand and how that relates to leaving her "union city man"--her ordinary life in Jersey--"What are we gonna do?" Deborah has talked about the affect NYC had on her as a young girl many times. |

The ad libs at the end are: "feeling bad for 3 to 4 days, feeling sad for 3 to 4 more, feeling hazy for 45 minutes, feeling crazy for 45 more we've been dancing all night long, waiting in the corner 'cause something's wrong, don't wanna get up and see that dawn...like the day before. A spliff, a pound, a half a pint of brown, this is the way we spell CAMDEN TOWN! I shouldn't speed it's not my need, feeling crazy for 45 more" [god love ya Joe!] |
