Wiz Khalifa – Black and Yellow Lyrics 14 years ago
Khalifa uses repetition to alternate between black, an archetypical color representing death and chaos, and yellow, a color associated with hope and prosperity.
He juxtaposes his dark upbringing, perhaps alluding to his struggles as a young black man, with the color of gold, treasure, and what may be known as "bling." The recurrent automotive language is an important motif because of its representation of sexual frustration. The speaker's financial ups and downs culminate on his usage of a car as a sexual surrogate, which may symbolize some level of impotence or emasculation.
If this is true, it becomes evident that the black-and-yellow contrast is a reflection of the cognitive dissonance of a financially and sexually unstable individual.
When trying to express his frustration, Mr. Khalifa could come up with little more than "black and yellow." The frustrated outcry, "You know what it is!" invites the reader to reach deeper to figure out the speaker's plight.
