This song is NOT pro-religion, quite the opposite actually. It helps to know about the band during this time in their music career. When they were on MTV's Unplugged singer, Ed Kowalczyk, held a bible while singing "Operation Spirit [The Tyranny Of Tradition]" during the lyrics "Heard a lot of talk about this Jesus. A man of love, and a man of strength. But what a man was two thousand years ago means nothing at all to me today" and he dropped the bible on the floor. No they were not for religion at that time in the nineties. "And to love a god And to fear a flame And to burn a crowd that has a name" does not read as a positive message about Christianity. Thus the "Now we won't be raped, hey Now we won't be scarred like that, hey" refer to not allowing religion to victimize our beliefs in ourself or others. Unfortunately in the 2000's Ed Kowalczyk became a born again christian and has released solo albums that are christian rock. SO SAD!!! |

My Take On This Song This song describes the inhumanity one must endure to earn god's love. The lyric 'Another destiny lies leeched Upon the ground' tells of a persons destiny being leeched, having the blood sucked out of it, that being the life. He sings 'Rage on omnipotent', we are to be terrorized by god as he rages in anger if we want to gain his love and salvation. This is a horrible thing to subject anyone to. He refers to people who can't find love or moral guidance without having to follow someone who victimizes them for their love and acceptance. That is not some one I want to follow. |

My Interpretation I see this as being applauded by the act of genocide which no matter who does it is a crime against mankind. The lyrics give me the feeling of a disregard for humanity from god. This rings true for me when he signs 'Shake my head Turn my face to the floor Dead to respect To respect to be born Lest we forget who lay' A person shakes their head and faces down when disgusted by an act of inhumanity such as the Holocaust. This song is referring to the story of Noah's ark which to me, is Hitler's dream realized by a sociopath. |

CORRECTION TO MY POST SUBMITTED IN WHOLE........SORRY ERROR - Sometimes you --->can<--- hardly blame them because some time this world can be a...really hard place. CORRECTION - Sometimes you --->can't<--- hardly blame them because some time this world can be a...really hard place. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Below is the dialogue from Jim James while on 'Storytellers' telling the meaning to the song 'Dondante'. As Jim talked it was so real and emotional for him, the audience and most anyone watching it on TV or video. If you're a fan you know and have felt that 'Real and Emotional' is a big part of 'My Morning Jacket'. Ah, all I can say is that he was a real...brilliant...soul. Ah, he.... met him in fourth grade ah, we were the same age. Ah, but I always felt like...he was a little older than me. He knew a little bit more than me. Ah, and we always had big dreams. We used to...we played in our first band together and dreamed big dreams. And, ah, would see shows like 'Storytellers' on TV or ah, 'Unplugged' Or you know the things you see on TV as a kid. You know like 'whoa man maybe some day we could do that, maybe we could do that'. Ah, so, but he...he just...no matter how much you told him how special he was he could never hear it. And I'm sure you all know someone like that. That...you just can't.... Get through to em. [You hear Jim exhale the gasp of air he took to stop from crying] And I.... Didn’t want to tell this story and all emotional. But I knew there was no way to not get all emotional about it. But, ah, he, like so many people like that unfortunately choose, choose to leave this...this world. Sometimes you can't hardly blame them because some time this world can be a...really hard place. But every time we play this song...he's with us. And, ah, I'll never forget playing the first time. Ah, and he was.... There. And every time we play it.... He’s there. And at the end of the song I always take a trip back, backstage to say 'Hi' to him. Because we, we dreamed so much together and he didn't...get to...live out...his ability to chase his dream. So I wanted him to, to get a chance to play 'Storytellers' with us. |
