I think its about the guilt of bringing someone that you care about down with you. I interpret this to be about a guy that has many issues. Maybe an alcoholic? He cares about this girl very much. He does not want to bring her down the wrong path with him. He will feel guilty for ruining her life and keeping her from being happy. He has weak moments where he wants to see her. He might give in and it makes him feel worse. |

I think this song is about how timing is important in how a relationship develops. The tide is high, meaning there are obstacles and it is rough right now, but she's hanging on and not going any where. Her love interest has other things in his life that are taking priorities over her and it hurts her. But she is going to fight for what she wants. |
