Sinead O'Connor – Never Get Old Lyrics 2 years ago
According to an interview in Uncut, Sinead O'Connor wrote this when she was 16 about a boy she had a crush on. She recalled, "He was this gorgeous guy that all the girls wanted to go out with. I went out with him for like a day and then he sensibly dumped me."

He had a hawk and would let her feed it. "What girl can resist that?"

Tool – Sober Lyrics 2 years ago
@[Babyeater:45725] I didn;'t feel that the rhetorical questions ask these higher powers anything. It's more of an observation that he's been abandoned. Sort of the grief-anger stage before bargaining, "Why can't we be drunk?" Then he pretty much accepts that fate at the end.

The Smashing Pumpkins – Beguiled Lyrics 3 years ago
This song makes me so happy! I felt it could be Superhero theme song, ya know? That super-power, high-tech cyberpunk vibe. Ok, lyrics... ah, right. 180° off. I had like a Gamora-type Heroine in my head but this is the villain. I get he's once betrayed so now the world pays for his lot in life. And he's building some sort of villain army? Do unto others as I do unto you? He has a smile on his face though. He enjoys this, like a drug. Could be a molester? Pro'ly. Thanks Billy for ruining this monster track! (I still love it.)

@[SixStringSoul:44274] Try Ænema by Tool. Very much an f you message there.

Followed by meteor showers and tidal waves
Followed by fault lines that cannot sit still
Followed by millions of dumbfounded dipshits"

Spiritbox – Circle With Me Lyrics 3 years ago
I thought I heard that this song was about burning at the stake. Such as witch trials and the carried out sentences. This person embraces the flames becomes a martyr and ascends for eternity. Like a god. Lyrically, it syncs pretty well. Religious, or cult-like overtones. Maybe that's the way Courtney felt as Spiritbox was gaining success and used it as a metaphor.

Tool – Right in Two Lyrics 4 years ago
The BREAKDOWN

I've read better interpretations (@[CAdventurer:38716]), but I wanted to share this one.

I'm now interpreting the instrumental breakdown from the Angels point of view. They reflect, think about it, grow with it, and give us (monkeys) more reasons to fight. First we fought only for ground and fruit. Now, were they so innocent? I say they dropped from the heavens off the bench and gave us way more reasons to fight. Suddenly we're fighting over abstract stuff like sky, love, over time. We're spilling blood. Angels watch on the sidelines again. Enjoy us fighting like thirsty fans at a cockfight. Do the Angels want to cut us monkeys right in two.

Learn to swim, right?

@[CAdventurer:38715] Love this.

I don't know why, but I'm now interpreting this same section from the Angels point of view. They reflect, think about it, grow with it, then arm and give us (monkeys) more reasons to fight. First we fought only for ground and fruit. Now, were they so innocent? I say they came off the bench and gave us way more reasons to fight, abstract stuff like sky, love, over time. We're spilling blood over your same timeline. Angels can watch on the sidelines again. Enjoy us fighting like thirsty fans at a cockfight. I've even wondered if the Angels wanted to cut us monkeys right in two.

Learn to swim, right?

I know it doesn't resolve well to that interpretation, but I wanted to share getting lost in that imagery.

James Brown – Get Up (I Feel Like Being A) Sex Machine Lyrics 4 years ago
We're near or in the "Free Love" era of the 60s. Also Black power. I visualize a Mack Daddy (or Mack Momma) in the club or wherever having undeniable confidence to hook up with a sex partner, time and time again, like a machine. A sex machine. Sung and done only in the way the Godfather of Soul and the Master of Funk can do it.

@[unsaved:37197] I at first thought this song was a big "F you..." and "Talk to the hand." But you're saying this is a surrender? Is there any aspect of the story telling us who is better off? The oppressed Hero in smug righteousness? Or the oppressors?

Tool – The Pot Lyrics 4 years ago
Sorry if this one has been said.

“When life gives you lemons make lemonade.”

Lemons = bitterness that the upper-ups give to common people and were forced to deal with it the best we can.

So is this saying that the protagonist (Maynard) is quite aware that they’re squeezing out so much they can’t even see who they’re juicing anymore?

Now scrolling to see WTF indigo is all about!

Van Halen – Don't Tell Me (What Love Can Do) Lyrics 4 years ago
I like the Alex insight/interpretations.

I saw an interview with Sammy Hagar and he was saying this was coming from his pain from Kurt Cobain's suicide.

Listening through that lens makes the lyrics all the more clear. Kurt knew he had all this influence, power, etc., but had a lot of esteem issues that haunted him. He turned inward. so instead of listening to friends and those who loved him, he turned to drugs (heroin) and eventually suicide (by shotgun). Don't tell me what love can do.

I can't say much about the lyrics being attributed to Eddie and Alex. But remember there was a huge rift by that time between the bros and Sammy.

I love the song. Big VH fan. But I dare say Eddie seems to be phoning it in? He's way better than these licks, but since it's Eddie it still works (and way better than in most other hands).

Nirvana – Where Did You Sleep Last Night (Lead Belly cover) Lyrics 5 years ago
Since no one's said it, here's the story I took from the song.

I love this song.

Yes, it's a man and woman having an affair or in some sort of confidant situation. We join them at the near-climax of this movie. After searching past dawn he’s finally found and cornered her. The man "boyfriend" knows something's terribly wrong. They were gonna hook up "last night" but "girlfriend/wife" didn't show up. Also, word got out on the town that she wasn't home either. Not an option in the 1800s I'm guessing.

In the argument, the boyfriend tells "My girl, my girl, don't lie to me." Very male- patronizing for these times, but he’s calm. He has feels for the woman but already knows they're in deep. He keeps asking her, "Where did you sleep last night?" Where were you?

The woman is shook and having a nervous breakdown. "In the pines." is all she can answer. "Where the sun don't shine." She was hiding "all night through."

Boyfriend in this story is still keeping it together. He knows her life in this town is over and asks, "Where will you go?" What's the plan?

So she tells him that she's leaving. Maybe north to "where the cold wind blows." But back to the pines.

Then Leadbelly fills us in on the rest of the story. What they both know. Her husband is dead. Not just dead, killed! Decapitated, last night. Not only that, but her husband was a "hard-working man'," the kind of guy the town would stand behind. A loss to the community.

The boyfriend goes back to the girlfriend. This is not good. "Your husband is dead! Where did you sleep last night." We'll be found out!

The woman is crying but simply has no more fucks to give. I was "in the pines." Coming back to town is not an option. Do I need to spell it out for you? I killed him!

We don't know why she killed him, but from the way Kurt’s singing and that bass cello’s grueling, I'd speculate that either:
a) Husband found out about the affair and she killed him. Maybe before he killed her?

Or more likely in my story…

b) Since Husband was a "hard-working man" he was pro’ly a "hard-drinking man" too? Long days. Rarely home at night—enough time for an affair to develop? And when he was home it was bad. Rape-y like. And this man was in the way of her meeting true love with the Boyfriend. Maybe even Husband found out and finally confronted her. Would use it as leverage. Her life was now in ruin. She was angry. Why else would he deserve such a violent death? In the moment there was little choice.

The boyfriend over the final verses of the song can't deny it any further and erupts in a rage. He knows the cost of a 19th century woman killing her husband. He now demands, "Don't lie to me!” Let me help you. “Where will you go?” Let me be there for you.

But she tells him no. It’s not on him. Put away your hero myths. This is hers to bear alone. Her life is over. She’s has little choice. Rather than giving the town the satisfaction of dragging her through the mud, she chooses the pines on her own terms. Realistically, to shiver and die.

Fade to black.

The line that hit me was, “They hold their breath not to catch the sick.” Such a powerful statement. Real. Reminded me of “cooties” when I was in, like, kindergarden. Now, in the song she’s much older but getting it from both boys and girls—rejected by all. Cuts deep.

Run-DMC – Jam Master Jay Lyrics 7 years ago
Back in the day when DJs ruled, MCs had to bow down. Show respect. Give props to their MC. The "meaning" of the song is not as important as the beat, the cut, the mix--giving Jay the spotlight. Skill wise, as a pure DJ, I would agree that JMJ was not tops. But like Ringo's heavy beat, like George Harrison's lead and rhythm... were they the best drummers or guitarists? No. But who would deny their musicianship? Even Lennon/McCartney for that matter. JMJ knew how to create epic, dope tracks. Legend.

Black Sabbath – Sabbath Bloody Sabbath Lyrics 8 years ago
@[kratosaurion:23981]
The depth of your asinine comment is glorious. How did you put so much stupid succinctly?
1) This is about Black Sabbath, yet you start off with U2
2) Comparing 80s post punk. Or Post Police/Pretenders to New Age Ambiance/Enya Pop
3) Trash. Let's hold on that. In no particular order, and without mentioning a phenomenal canon of artistry and longevity, they've produced a unique sound, taken risks, spoke to social issues while other bands sang about the party and misogyny, pissed off fans and critics, won them back, paid homage to their forerunners, and on...
4) Bono--Ozzy has four letters, yet you pivot to Bono. I think you're crushing on him. Maybe it's a thing you have for 80s mullets.
5) And his gay followers--Brilliant! You've used this opportunity to bring out your homophobia, speaking to your hatred of self, confirmed by Ozzy in the opening Sabbath Bloody Sabbath lines:
You've seen life through distorted eyes
You know you had to learn

@[Michial:22965] Speaking of that NW '90s era, Soundgarden has that song "My Good Eye Closed." Here, as Ken emphatically belts out, "I can see, I can see, I can see it all with my one good eye." Think this is as much a "power trio" diss to Nirvana and a later nod to Soundgarden?

Bee Gees – Harry Braff Lyrics 10 years ago

"In these days, the pace of this song might not seem fast enough to follow the zooming F1 car driven by the (imaginary) F1 hero Harry Braff, but in the sixties this speed was enough. Besides, you can always set your turntables to 45 rpm and listen to brothers Gibb go at the speed of light (this will also suit you if you prefer the 80s’ Bee Gees singing voices). If you have no idea what I’m talking about, ask your parents (or possibly grandparents)."

Where it she was singing "represent" I had been saying "rat-a-tat" as if the child soldiers were firing at that moment--'specially with the added lock and load sound FX in the song.

Clearly, it's "represent" though.
