Keane – Spiralling Lyrics 14 years ago
I've always taken it as talking about someone's plans and dreams.

Things you want tend to haunt you after a while. You get obsessed, trying to achieve them, waiting for them. You see how anything, everything could fit into the dream. Of course, you start doubting yourself and it all goes downhill from there. You're in a negative spiral of doubt.

The next verse is about other people telling you your dreams are ridiculous, making you question them again. You tell them your dreams, in hopes of having an ally in achieving them. But when you reach out to them for validation, they tell you you should give it up.

The "Did you want to..." section is just a bunch of dreams, followed quickly by "I never saw the light," as in the light of day or the light of success. The dreams never came to fruition, even though you waited for a long time.

"When we fall in love we're just falling in love with ourselves." You fall in love with someone because they are a lot like you, generally. Another negative spiral, because then there's no getting better in life, just more of the same. (This part throws me off a bit too. I love this line, but I can't figure out how it works with the song!)

Keane – Better Than This Lyrics 14 years ago
It's about someone thinking about how everything turned out so different than intended, how they could have done better.

---

Is this current life situation what was supposed to happen? Am I supposed to be in this situation?

I could have a better life.

I've lived a while now, but I haven't accomplished very much. I have many regrets.

I've taken measures to feel better about my life, and not having to achieve everything. I take medicine for it, I talk to people about it, I try and tell myself I'm doing alright. But I know I can do better.

Too bad, it's too late, what my life is is what it is and I can't change what has happened already.

I was expecting to fall in love with some beautiful star, maybe. But I can't see myself with the star. It's almost like that was someone else's expectations for the future, cause there's no way I could have done that.

I could have been something big. I could have been socializing with stars, my name could have been known by everyone.

I could have a better life.

Keane – Crystal Ball Lyrics 14 years ago
If I remember right, I read somewhere "the iron sea" refers to tensions in the band. So, I see "Crystal Ball" as a story about the tension according to Tim, the song's writer. Written in anger and sadness and frustration, which really reflects in the word choice.

---

Other members are kind of taking over his place in the band. He's been mean because he has just lost his kindness during the tension in the band.

He wants to know the future will be better, that this will all end.

Lines have been crossed. No one listens, so it's like he's not even there. It seems to him that he's just fading from the band.

He wants things to be better again. This part (I'm fading out, everything I know is wrong. So put me where I belong.) is sarcastic. Everything he thinks, apparently, is just wrong so other members are just telling him he's stupid or something.

He's touring with the band so he's not sure where they are, as is common when bands tour many places very quickly. He reflects on himself and what he believes, trying to figure out how to make it all get better. He's praying to whoever may or may not be out there (fall upon the earth, call upon the air), but no one apparently is listening.

I hear this part as more pleading that it'll get better than being sarcastic about the situation. He really believes he doesn't know anything and he needs someone to sort him out.

---

If it's about love, he kind of has neglected his relationship and his lover has replaced him, although the replacing is going slowly and subtly. The speaker can tell, though, that he's being replaced.

Muse – Starlight Lyrics 14 years ago
"Starlight" is about a guy who is not sure about his relationship, and it is more or less an unhealthy relationship.

---

"This ship" is love. It's taking the speaker away from everyone else he loves. He's deserted his friends and family for his lover.

"Starlight" is his dream relationship with his lover. He keeps trying to attain this perfect relationship so he puts a lot of effort into it. But now he's not sure if all the effort is worth what he gets out of the relationship.

He really just wants a simple life with his lover.

His lover makes his life a lot better but she also makes his life painful, as "electrify" is referring to his life actually coming alive and his life being electrocuted, in a way. He wants to have the rest of the world fall in love in a healthy way.

He'll be true to his lover if she is true to him and doesn't desert him.

He was hoping and expecting so much from the relationship, but it's just consuming him and she has revealed her true feelings.

He's kind of begging her to stay with him from this point on, despite how the relationship hurts him.

---

Could also be seen as being about fame, but eh.

Coldplay – Speed of Sound Lyrics 14 years ago
I take this to be about war, and the governments not telling their citizens what's going on.

Birds go flying at the speed of sound - Bombers and other fighting planes going so fast.

Birds came flying from the underground - Nukes coming from underground bunkers.

All that noise, all that sound - Explosions, gunfire, etc.

All those places that I have found - They're being destroyed.

How long am I gonna can stand with my head stuck under the sand - Ignoring what's going on in the world, not being told what's going on at least.

Ideas that you'll never find or the inventors could never design - Everything that can be cut off by war, or maybe the just incomprehensible idea that people would hurt each other.

The buildings that you put up - The institutions, systems, etc, being destroyed.

All lit up - Obvious explosives imagery.

All those signs I knew what they meant - We can all see war and such coming, just by what's going on in the world.
