David Bowie – Dead Against It Lyrics

Y'know, I always took this as an honest love song, though the lyrics are intentionally cut-up muddly. Despite Bowie's chronic storytelling I do feel this is inspired by Iman. It's told with such fondness, and I think the closest to sense these lyrics make is as comments on the practical minutiae of a relationship. I never interpreted the title much but it could fit with that if I just say it's how lovers can have differing opinions. |

Patrick Wolf – Slow Motion Lyrics

The whole album's pretty direct.
Wolf sings of his solo solemnity, and then comfort/passion with a partner, both of which get fittingly likened to slow motion. Nice. |

David Devant & His Spirit Wife – Miscellaneous Lyrics

I think there's a sentence break in "That's all. The extraneous..."
As far as I can tell, Vessel is saying that he finds minutiae important. Well, maybe not important, but somehow vital. Perhaps in the 'vitality' sense rather than 'vitalness'. I'm with him on this. |

Longpigs – On And On Lyrics

The 'wish you would leave me' etc. always implies to me a self-loathing, or a suicidal painedness where there's this one good thing left; dazzlingly good but the rest is awful. 'you' leaving 'me' would remove the justification, which could be easier.
And I'm agreeing about his voice: things like "I just can't go on" are not good lyrics without his yell. |

Notice that the chorus line probably refers to that much-loved song '(You're) Having My Baby' by Paul Anka. Presumably sarcastic? |

Well, isn't the boy just a person the now-tired relationship was with? I don't think there's much to the line. |

Anathema – Better Off Dead Lyrics

Notice she says 'looking for a fantasy', NOT 'looking for a patsy'. I loved that line, but I wonder what she means by this change? Is it simply a misheard lyric, a misheard and preferred lyric, or a completely conscious tweak? |

David Bowie – Eight Line Poem Lyrics

One thing that shows throughout many Bowie songs, particularly this one, is that the very sound of his lyrics strongly complements the music.
I'm basically certain he's describing his yearling child's bedroom in the first four lines; they're quite direct for Bowie lines. Clara sounds like a cuddly toy. The last four lines zoom out to show the greater scene, and get a bit oblique. The words and music portray a relaxed, content attitude, and it is the lack of pomp that makes this song an alternative kind of excellent. |

David Bowie – Eight Line Poem Lyrics

The song 'Cactus' wasn't written by him, and came about long after this song. To link it to this song is quite silly, but I agree on the Never Get Old. For another not written by Bowie, 'Criminal World' is alluded to on 'Fantastic Voyage' half a decade before he covered it. I know I've noticed more at some point!
