this song doesn't really need an explanation but i thought i'd share some thoughts. its a funny song and so well written. how many of us guys can relate to this? i had girls at school knock me back and i carried around the stupid 'scar' because they weren't that into me. it hurt my pride and for a while i couldn't get past it, or didnt want to. as Chris says "your heart would soon recover, but you dont want it to you love this aching agony". so we nurse the disappointment and refuse to contact that girl on facebook after all these years cause she dumped me or whatever. and the sad part is that our other relationships suffer because of this hurt that we nurse. as far a chris' song is concerned i just try to listen and learn and laugh |

i agree with the posts above that the song speaks about taking responsiblity for our actions. as a christian i believe that under God we are accountable to Him for what we have done and haven't done and that His purpose for us is to be reconciled to Him through His Son Jesus Christ. im not wanting to preach i just find that this song brings those thoughts to my mind. |

Chris Smither's songs are awesome and this is one of his best even if he didn't write it. i have felt that this song meant losing a part of yourself in love/a relationship in a way that was detremental to yourself and in isolation you allowed your soul to be swallowed up somehow. instead of finding a way to grow personally for the good of yourself and the relationship you allow yourself to be swallowed up by what you think is love and so you dont just feel the blues from it all, you take the blues to another level by not taking positive steps and find a way out.
Ok so that may be a little deep but when i first heard the song i kind of related to it in this way. but i would like to hear someone elses views (maybe chris smither himself!) about it. although artists usually shy away from explaining their songs! |
