Grapes of Wrath – All The Things I Wasn't Lyrics 10 years ago
Touching, poignant and complex. Listening to the lyrics is like having a conversation with someone who speaks in double negatives.. you need a moment's reflection to process the message.

The economy of the lyrics really captures in form that feeling, when you want to cast out all the mixed messages you feel have been sent to you through the actions and words of another, in order to gain clarity.

Beautifully crafted song.

City and Colour – Two Coins Lyrics 10 years ago
This is a beautiful, introspective song - dark, but strangely hopeful.

The version I listen to has somewhat different lyrics. Posting the lyrics in entirety, as not to have a mess of bits and pieces.

Two Coins

North west is where I'm heading,
Underneath the golden sky.
I'm searching for wisdom
That every man seeks to find

I've got wicked thoughts brewing.
Many evil deeds I've done.
I'm looking for a reason,
For a reason not to run

Cuz I've always been dark
With light somewhere in the distance.
I've always been dark
With light somewhere in the distance

I've got no destination.
No place to call my own.
I'll explore the constellations,
Til I find the cause I'm mean to hold

But come fever or come famine,
Come the biting winter cold,
Just put two coins upon my eyelids
So I can pay the boatman's toll

Cuz I've always been dark
With light somewhere in the distance.
I've always been dark
With light somewhere in the distance

I've been so unforgiving,
Stranded in old traditions

Cuz I've always been dark
With light somewhere in the distance.
I've always been dark
With light somewhere in the distance

I've always been dark
With light somewhere in the distance.
I've always been dark
With light somewhere in the distance

Mumford & Sons – Where Are You Now? Lyrics 11 years ago
You were strangely less than pained
Then you were cold
Triumphant in your mind
Of the logic that you hold

... how well expressed, that sinking feeling. That moment in which no matter what you might say to the partner or friend, or the intensity with which you'd express the sentiment, you know full well that you're not likely to be heard.

Lovely, wise, soft-spoken message, completely un-self-absorbed. The official vid for this song is very creative and entertaining. J'adore!

Tall Ships – Chemistry Lyrics 12 years ago
I love this song, and I really admire these guys.. "Chemistry", a beautiful study in sound, texture and idiom, and the simplicity of lyric to communicate a simple and meaningful message.

Musically, there are moments of urgent, early prog-rock riffs, electrified acoustic transitions, jazz rhythmic tempo, silence, dissonance, harmony, with a disco-esque lead-out on the high-hat towards the end.

The soft quality of the singer's voice, complimented periodically by the female backup singer, make "Chemistry" for me a real ear worm.

This tune is a beautiful soundscape, with a tender and timeless message.

Very perceptive commentary. While I'm not medically/professionally qualified to definitively say, the dissociative quality depicted in the lyrics, does seem like DD, as well as DID. May you be well.

Kevin Johansen – Down With My Baby Lyrics 12 years ago
I love this song. I love its humility and tenderness, its insight, its sung expression of patience.

It's anthemic quality, I find, is infectious, uplifting. And, in my view, Kevin Johansen has managed to create a real pearl of a song, through the device of fusion, a success that not many artists seem unable to pull off, without appearing to be imitating a style, or another artist.

"Down with my Baby" has, to my ear, a quality like - Nick Cave meets the Mamas & the Papas, while channelling Barry White and Lenny Kravitz. AND, his brilliance in the finished product is that it doesn't sound derivative, nor at all like an imitation.

The gentle wisdom of the lyric, ''Now you know, that you belong to yourself...'' , speaks from the voice of lived, conscious experience.

Again, I love this beautiful pearl of a song.

Crowded House – Don't Dream It's Over Lyrics 12 years ago
There's so much wisdom and insight contained in this song.

The rhythm has moments of heartbeat, moments arhythmic and meandering, like a river with eddies and furls. The strumming of the opening riff, conjures an image for me of wave-riplets lapping a riverbank or a shoreline.

At times he sings with the tempo, and at others he'll fall behind or sing ahead of the main rhythm. There's also a funny assymetry to the instrumental break which comes a little more than half way into the song, and repeats about 3 or 4 measures (as a motif) after the main stream of the song begins anew.

For me, this song is like a river, a kind of metaphor for life. It's all there - the good, the not so good, the obstacles, the ideas and points of view which can hold us prisoner. What I love lyrically about the song is it's call to action - Hey, now, hey, now.. Don't dream it's over! To me, the song speaks of the moment - now - and urges the Lover, whom the singer is addressing to engage with life and embrace a real intention to go beyond doubt, not simply engaging in hope (hope being a dangerous practice, in my view, because it clings to an expected outcome, and will only bring disappointment and suffering if the hoped-for thing is not realized).

To me, the lyrics really offer an antidote, a way to respond to the conditions which can arise in life, challenging us, way beyond our control and influence. The lyrics are transcendent, an expression of good-intention, liberating and freeing, as he puts it.

It's such a beautiful love song. Bonne fête de St-Valentin, Lover.. to the Lover in all of us!

City and Colour – Northern Wind Lyrics 12 years ago
What I love about this song, is the atmosphere of silence, or the sense of space throughout it - how he phrases the lyrics unhurriedly, the gambolling easy way he strums the guitar - there are brief, brief pauses which allow the bittersweetness of this tune to really settle in.

Later in the melody, the 'cello joins in for brief measures, pausing then returning to play, which at times create these momentary, but sweet harmonies with his chording on the guitar. I love the richness and the simplicity of this tune - the ebb and flow of feeling.

Regina Spektor – Fidelity Lyrics 13 years ago
For me, the tone of this song comes across as oblique, implied, understated and this captures my imagination. It's like a puzzle for me. Earlier this evening, I was watching an old episode of Secret Diary of a Call Girl, and this song was sound-card to one of the key scenes of the show. I'd forgotten this tune, even though it's a bit of an earworm. Anyhow, youTube.. Songmeanings.. here goes..

Fidelity feels like an irony in how it's used as the title, as so often we are NOT faithful to our true nature, by-passing really showing up in life, NOT living in conscious awareness.

Getting lost in all the sounds and inner voices has an undertone, something like how, if rehearsed often enough, we begin to believe the folklore we script for ourselves. We drift so reflexively into unexamined held-beliefs, and by keeping our world small, its smallness might serve to make it all the more controllable, as in protecting her heart truly, rather than truly letting it beat to its own rhythm.

Hearing all these words and music in the mind - it doesn't sound like she's speaking about a felt sense of something lyrical or harmonious - rather, it feels to music what a life lived in the head, is to living.. it's imaginary life.

The conditional flavour of the song is amplified by her list of what-ifs which stand contrary to fact. She submits that suppose none of these things had happened.. but implicitly they seem to have taken place, in spite of her circumstances. At the same time, we don't really know if she's suffering from loss or heartache. She does seem to acknowledge the unpredictibility of loving; that the willingness to risk is more complex than any ability to engineer desired outcomes. We just can never know how things are going to turn out and sometimes it's easier not to find out due to fear. I garner this from the line, "Suppose I kept on singing love songs just to break my fall.."

The fact that her friends say that it's going to get better, again, it harkens to my impressions of the title, Fidelity, and its ironic usage; that we are often unfaithful to our true nature, abandonning our own wisdom, in favour of the voice of others.

The video for this song has a kind of literal quality, starts off all black and white, with an imaginary lover. Then through an apparent willingness to risk, he takes true form, and life suddenly gets very colourful as the couple are seen to opt to experience life freely, rather than simply think about it.

I enjoy the paint throwing scene in the vid. It reminds me of the Indian festival of Holi. Holi has a lighthearted quality to it, in the way that Valentines Day has in the West. Curiously it's further interesting and happenstantial that the Festival of Holi derives from the Legend of Prahlada and Holika. The moral-of-the-story to this legend is basically that he who torments the truly faithful, will be soundly defeated. Full circle.. Fidelity.
