The line: "And we're walking our crooked backs home" should read.... And we're walking our crooked PATH home.
And I think "til no memories gone" should be SOON ALL MEMORY'S gone" |

P.S. As others have pointed out this struggle could easily be extrapolated to encompass mother earth and the legacy we leave behind for future generations or include the turmoil and confusion caused by religions... I just prefer the more intimate personal interpretation. |

Like most great songs that employ metaphors it's open too many interpretations and one is just as valid as the next.
Personally I think it's essentially about the struggle between ones adventurous and imaginative spirit and so called “common sense” or societal norms (this is a struggle familiar to most artists and can manifest itself in ways that could be considered extreme narcissism or delusions of grandeur).
Fighting the stranger is I believe a metaphor for exorcising ones own demons and coming to terms with ones own nature in order to find balance; therefore circumventing the potential future “burden”on a loved one (caused by having to dealing with unresolved internal issues). |
