Dio – Mystery Lyrics 14 years ago
"Can you hear me
Can you see
There's a storm on the edge of the sky
Does it matter
It does to me, I can tell you why"

First off, the "storm on the edge of the sky" should refer to a distant warning, something is coming closer that could rip apart your very soul. Also, the distance to the storm could be eternal (edge of the sky), so the time it takes for it to get here could be eternal as well. Now does it matter? The very power within such a brutal force might have consequenses you cannot predict, so yes it does matter.

"When there's thunder, there should be rain
But it don't always follow the rule
And is the wise man always right? No he can play the fool"

You cannot be sure that anything follows the rules, because everyone, everything has it's own rules. So what's the point of listening to the wise man? Isn't he just a fool among others, with his own rules and his own predictions?

It's always a Mystery...

"We are lightning
We are flame
And we burn at the touch of a spark
If there's fire, but no one sees
The there's only the dark"

With the “we are lightning, we are flame” Dio illustrates the power within every individual. We do not have to listen to all these predictions of “wise men”. The last two lines can be related to the philosophical question “If a tree falls in a forest, but no one hears it, does it make a sound?”. Same with “If there’s fire, but no one sees, are there still any flames?” Dio answers no, there is only the dark. Since he talked of us all as “flames” earlier, one can draw the conclusion that Dio is telling us that if we do not show our fire by making changes in our world, there is only darkness. We are fire, but at the same time we create the fire within us, or we let it die. We create and kill ourselves.

“Just imagine, will you try
I can see that you've opened your mind
Silver linings can disappear, but they always shine”

So in conclusion, the power lies within our minds, our imagination. If we just open our minds, we can see how this world was meant to be. It is harder than it might sound, but it is possible. Because silver linings can disappear before your eyes, hope can fade away from your darkened mind, but with your imagination, you can make it shine once again. The silver linings are still there even though you cannot see them; they are waiting for you to discover them, and yourself. And believe me when I say, they still shine.

And it’s always a mystery… you, me, everything we can see, we do not know anything, we only predict and assume, destroy everything from within our minds when we could create.

Dio – Another Lie Lyrics 14 years ago
I find that analysis interesting enochatron. I really like how he illustrates uncertainity with the repeated use of "maybe".

"It was just a summer night, maybe"

Was it just a summer night? Summer means of course warmth, happiness, good memories etc. But was it really a summer night this happened?

"When a shiver cut across the air"

Now you realise this uncertainity, something is wrong, this can't be another summer night.

"Should you run and get away? maybe... to the where-where-where"

I think maybe means you think you can but you can't. You think it was a summer night, and even when the shiver is sent across the air your think you can run, but where? Truth is, there is nowhere to run. I don't think this song is particularly about the "system". I think it is about power and control in general. Towards the end is the most interesting part for that analysis:

"Why it's crazy, when you feel you're getting stronger, why it's crazy, All the lies are getting longer"

Now you realise, you are getting stronger, YOU are getting power and control. Oh but all of your lies they just keep on getting longer... You are system now, you spread the lies that contaminate our world. Maybe.

Black Sabbath – Seventh Star Lyrics 14 years ago
Very interesting read, thank you. I have had my own interpretations of this song as well, but this is probably the intended one. Still sorrow and confusion often lead great artists into creating masterpieces with endless meanings, this one of them. One of my favourite Black Sabbath tracks, one of my favourite songs of all time.

Black Sabbath – Ancient Warrior Lyrics 14 years ago
I have thought that as well, but I saw a comment from Bob Daisley (one of the writers of these lyrics) that the song is really not about someone special. It probably has to do with some sort of main source of power which is misused by people, much like many think of Jesus. I do agree with your connections though.

I think that this song might be pointing at the fact that we have no saviour.
"Some will say it's all in vain, that he doesn't have a name"

Maybe he doesn't exist then? If he has no name. He is the king of all kings, and there is a king within us all. My suggestion would be to look around, does it look like we have a king within us all that obeys "the keeper of light"? I think there is a distinct ironic touch to this song, though it's very vague.

Black Sabbath – Angry Heart Lyrics 14 years ago
This song has at least two layers imo. First of all, it seems to be a "classic" tale of a lost love. The first lines confess selfishness as the reason. However, then it gets interesting:

"You always told me it was just insane, to feel such joy while others feel pain"

Granted, this has to do with being selfish as well, but it is explained in a quite confusing way. There's always someone in this world who feels pain, is that a reason for us never to feel joy?

"There's no way to change this angry heart, cos when love goes it will tear you apart"

Brings us back to the classic, but still brilliant, tale of a broken heart.

"And it's been this way, since time began, it's the desperate search for the promised land, and the years slip by so much like sand"

This has only in part to do with the broken heart. It is no longer a one-mans tale. It has been this way since time began, no one can ever change it, no one has power to find this promised land. Though we must all search, there has never been any other option. Still the years slip by...

"So many people who are dying to live, it tortures my heart they got so much to give"

The song moves even further away, there is no clear connection to the main message of the broken heart. There is a connection though to the promised land, which we all so desperately search for. "People who are dying to live" is almost a nod to "Killing Yourself to Live" but perhaps with a slightly different angle. People are destroying themselves in their search, it is their fate. The egoism is now fading away, as his love disappears he begins to see how much suffering that covers his heart.

"I never saw it as a battle before, to win the fight there has to be more"

This reminds me of a feeling I often have myself, all this suffering and struggle cannot possibly accord with our nature. Why is there a battle to begin with? Who do we fight? If we should, against all odds, win the fight, then what? There has to be more. Again:

"Theres no way to change this angry heart, cos all these fears will tear you apart"

Note that the selfish cry after the loss of love is gone, now it is relpaced by the fear, the fear for ourselves.

"And it's been this way since time began
It's an endless journey, it's the fate of man
To live each day and never understand
And it's been this way since time began
It's a desperate search for a master plan
And the years slip by like water through your hands"

The last words remind us of that we are not in charge of our own lives. We think so only because that is what we are meant to think. The endless journey towards our fate is unstoppable, we cannot change our course. The master plan that we search was not created by us, nor was it created for us to find. After all we only obey, we never decide. And the years slip by, like water through your hands...

Black Sabbath – Over To You Lyrics 14 years ago
My interpretation is that Geezer Butler wanted to explain how ridiculous the whole "system" is so to speak. Imo this is by far the best lyrics on the Never Say Die! album, a great album btw.

First you grow up, you are receptive to all the lies that society will soon throw at you. They teach you religion but never explain enough why, they expect you to just take in all the information and never question their superiority. In other words, they expect you to "hand over your childhood to them".

But you know there is something more to it all than what they told you, so you keep searching for your own mind, lost somewhere along the lies inside you. You cannot find it, since your mind is already too corrupted and twisted. There is only one option, to hand over your future to them. Just close your eyes and let them lead you along whatever path they chose.

"Working for freedom, fighting your wars..." etc refers to following the politicians and "the systems" path. And when the judgement day comes, when it all turns out to be lies, You shall hand over all their promises and lies, back to them. You shall prove that you never believed in it all, you just had no chance, you are not to blame for the destruction you have been part of, because they gave you no option.

In the end, you are no wiser when you die than when you were born, so what can you tell your children other than "I know what I did was wrong, but there wasn't no option for me, there won't be for you either". Hand over your children to them as well, maybe one day they will be given the opportunity to choose, but meanwhile they must obey the system.

Black Sabbath – Back to Eden Lyrics 14 years ago
I think this song is about always wanting more than what can be given to you. "We can bring you back to Eden", must be the greatest wish of humanity. But we don't look for it, if we find something we keep looking for something "better", we fight each other to find the ultimate truth, Freedom fighting Freedom.

Second verse is a hopeful prayer that maybe humanity will learn what's important, not having to "live a life on the run". But the third verse states that no humanity won't learn from its mistakes, we are forever doomed.

Black Sabbath – Born Again Lyrics 14 years ago
One of the best songs ever made. When looking at Gillan's other lyrics I get confused, how could he write so much generic lyrics and still be able to write this masterpiece? maybe some uncredited help from mr. Butler? who knows, anyway here goes:

In the first verse he talks about his "room" which is most likely a symbol for his soul. The tapestries are faded and worn, he has been through much sorrow. Nothing is what it used to be in the room, something is greatly missed. Darkness controls his soul, and only the memory of forgotten passions can shine a light on what once was.

Continuing, we have the powerful metaphor, the "wall of power". This wall does not protect anyone from the room or the room itself, it only blocks out the light, and it is waiting. What is the wall waiting for? Perhaps it is waiting for the room to completely fade into darkness and give in to the superior power it faces, this is still kind of a blur to me but sounds quite logical. Again the return of these forgotten memories, the champions that once where are still a part of your mind, your soul. They still have the power to rise against the wall, to rise again for one final killing blow.

You will be born again, there is always hope. However, between the lines here lies a darker message. You do not know how when or where you will be born again, only that this is the case. Being born again might not mean you get another chance, it might as well mean that you shall rise from the ashes to serve Lucifer in his kingdom of eternal flame.

Here enters the satanic touch of the song. "Look at this prince of evil, fighting for your mind". The storyteller suggests that Lucifer is trying to liberate your mind from the infection caused by priests and religion. They shall aim at the hearts of all Gods who try to control you, be born again and you shall be free forever.

In the last verse you take a second look through my window. What you see now is your future as a free being, no longer enslaved by the religion that once chained you down. You can also see everyone else, still grey retards floating helplessly in circles, trapped forever in a cruel system of oppression. But together with the prince of evil you shall now rise, you shall challenge and kill.

Again the ending follows the same theme, follow me, be king for a day, I know what to do, you must join in my fight against the wall of power. We shall be born again.

At least this is in short what I think of when I hear the magical lyrics of Born Again, in my opinion one of the best songs in music history.

Black Sabbath – The Hand That Rocks The Cradle Lyrics 14 years ago
that's interesting. I also believe it has a second meaning, trying to describe in a more general way how ppl try to stop you from living your life. The same hand that rocks the cradle also keeps you away from what you want to accomplish in life. The same people that you are close to are also the ones holding your chains.

Black Sabbath – Anno Mundi (The Vision) Lyrics 14 years ago
I have always felt that this song wants people to wake up and make their own decisions. Of course TYR is pretty much about the vikings and the Gods they chose to follow. In the Sabbath Stones martin more or less destroys the old norse faith and promotes christianity, (maybe with an ironic touch, who knows). Great conceptual album, really makes you think.
