I think it's about the connection we have with nature, specifically during Peart's ghost rider period. "The way out" is separation from society, "the way in" is the deeper understanding of the big question gained from the separation. Basically, as confused and desperate we get, there is always nature to turn to which will show us beauty and truth. |

I think you guys are taking the meaning to literally. This song seems to have more meaning than just a trip to the dentist. He uses the want for candy as a metaphor for the want of vices. The line "Saint vitus dance on my morals tonight" refers to sydenham's chorea which is a disease which has symptoms of the loss of motor skills, lowered cognition, and twitching of muscles. Alice seems to be saying that his morals have this disease, in that they are not clear and twitch from place to place depending on which vice he is after. He goes to the "doctor" to see which views are good and just, and which he needs to be rid of. The "doctor" tells him that his teeth are fine, or in other words his views, but his gums got to go, or in other words his morals. Basically that his views will straighten out if his morals are corrected because they are the root of all our thoughts. He tries to get his morals straightened out, but in the end he wakes up "still seeing spies." The line, "De Sade's gonna live in my mouth tonight" is the most telling. De Sade was a French aristocrat that believed one should live without morals and justice. This shows that Alice has been won over by vices. This is complimented further by saying that "the rotten tooth fairy has been satisfied"

I never really realized that this song is actually 7 minutes long until I just looked in itunes. I swore it was like 4-5 minutes. I guess time flies by when you get absorbed in the music. |
