Recent events in Japan made me think of this song. When I was in college in the early 80's someone told me that the song was about a nuclear power plant melt-down. This was about the same time as the movie "China Syndrome" and the accident at Three Mile Island. Uncle Joe is a voluteer who dressed in a radiation suit (gypsy leathers) to "brave those bronze beauties" (glowing hot fuel rods). The dead mans hand - "eights and aces" represents the atom (A) and electrons (8's). "Cutting the cake" is splitting the atom. Someone has to go into the reactor (Fire Lake) to stop the melt-down, knowing that the radiation will kill them. "Who's gonna do it?" |
