I'm not sure about the whole song, but I've quote "Faith is an island in the setting sun/ but proof is the bottom line for everyone" a lot - to illustrate the difference between trusting our faith and our intuition and that other side of our brain that likes analysis and quantification and scientific proof. We need both to get through life. |

I agree with many of the comments - I love this song and feel like it tells my own story - I fell from a great and gruesome height, too, and it was both delicious and life-changing and painful. I ran through the screen doors of discretion and I'd do it again, by god. It doesn't hurt that I'm an Iowan. It is true that it is both sad and evocative. You pay a price for driving above the limit with no seat belt on. It is also thrilling and you feel amazingly alive. But try not to hurt anyone! |

| Leonard Cohen – Tower of Song Lyrics

This is one of my favorite Cohen songs. I think it is about the work of songwriting, and "tower" is funny because it makes me think of an office tower, while songwriters labor away in solitude in garrets or whatever. The line "I was born with the gift of a golden voice" always gets a big applause when he sings it - we get the irony... I also love the line "I ache in the places that I used to play" - a sign of aging. I was in a serious auto accident once and this line was my mantra through recovery. Great, great song. |

| Elvis Costello – (What's So Funny 'bout) Peace, Love and Understanding Lyrics

Yes, this song was written by Nick Lowe, but many more people associate it with Elvis. I was studying James Joyce's Ulysses and made a presentation on one of the episodes (Cyclops, in which Bloom goes into a pub and "Citizen" starts to berate him and chases him out into the street) - before we started our discussion, I played this song as I thought it fit so perfectly. I don't know about Nick, but I bet that Elvis is very familiar with Joyce. |
