Patrick Wolf – The City Lyrics 12 years ago
From the cd booklet,

"I was lost until that night
We kissed, given up
On life so darling
Know this, you're
Worth more than
How this city let you
Down, Want to see you
Top, top, top,
Top of the morning'

Patrick Wolf – Together Lyrics 12 years ago
Slight correction to the above, from the cd booklet...

'Forgive my jealousy,
That's not the man I long to be'

and

'I put my arms around your waist,
Pull you closer in embrace.
I say divided we fall, but stronger,
We stand together.'

Annie Lennox – A Thousand Beautiful Things Lyrics 13 years ago
For anyone curious, in Annie Lennox's words: "I was coming through a dark period, desperately trying to find some joy but not finding it, and trying to remind myself what happiness means. I was grasping at straws trying to find a reason to be cheerful, and then that song arrived. There was some beauty after all. It was like a little mantra, to remind myself to live, breathe, sleep, to try to make your life complete. Beauty is everywhere... in a sunrise, a drop of dew, the warm breath of a child, or a flower opening. That is the sacred gift of life, even if we don't always acknowledge it."

Temposhark – It's better to have loved Lyrics 13 years ago
Admittedly, my first thought was "oh, it's about a breakup". But the opening lyric, "You didn't wait for me to help you out / I would've stayed to clear those final doubts" implies that the -other- person was responsible for what happened. Why would the other person need help, if it was just a breakup? And the lyric, "I find myself thinking, 'God what have you done?'" isn't necessarily about the narrator himself...

I do believe this song is about loss - but it resonates more along the lines of what you'd say to someone who committed suicide. Someone you loved, and will never have in your life again, because you said too many things to push them away, didn't help them, even while thinking things like "There's more I could have done," but knowing it's too late. There's no hope in the song, because the person could never come back, so the only option is to "rewind".

That's the impression it left on me.
