| Social Distortion – When the Angels Sing Lyrics | 15 years ago |

I'm a big Social D fan and this song is really close to my heart because it was played at a good and dear friend's funeral (I also want it played at mine). I'm also really into spirituality and God, so when I look at this song I am blown away by how deep it really is. Yes, I know it's about facing death. But if you scratch on the surface enough, you'll find something really powerful. To me, this song has two meanings: 1) becoming a believer in God and 2) facing incredible sorrows and hardships. The first meaning that I believe it has is one that I stick to. When you become a believer in any type of loving higher power or God and abandon your past, you feel intense pain and realize that you really didn't know what life was all about until you started believing. "When the Angels Sing" could be (I may be wrong) a reference to the Bible when it says that the Angels rejoice (or "sing") whenever a new Believer accepts God into their lives. That doesn't mean that he or she will never question why God does the things He does... he or she, in the song, just knows that everything's better when He's there. Another thing I found compelling about this song is the quote: "There's gonna be a Heaven, 'cause I've already done my time in hell." That's a pretty theological statement to make. Very similar to this one: "When people use the word hell, what do they mean? They mean a place, an event, a situation absent of how God desires things to be. Famine, debt, oppression, loneliness, despair, death, slaughter--they are all hell on earth. Jesus' desire for his followers is that they live in such a way that they bring heaven to earth. What's disturbing is when people talk more about hell after this life than they do about Hell here and now. As a Christian, I want to do what I can to resist hell coming to earth." - Rob Bell, Velvet Elvis: Repainting the Christian Faith I am pretty sure that Mike Ness didn't think of Rob Bell when he wrote that. I'm not even sure if Ness knew that he wrote theological gold. The second meaning is that the saying “When the Angels Sing” is the hardship, in a sense, speaking back at you and making you realize you have to face pain in order to live life happily and that for every thing you've suffered for is actually worth it in the end (“A baby is born when it all comes down”). Works either way, but I prefer the first definition. By the way, I'm not trying to convert anyone... I'm just stating what I believe. If you want to have a debate over this, feel free to reply or send me a message. :-) |

To me, this song is about realizing how much time you've wasted chasing after someone (could even be about unrequited love) after losing everything in your life thanks to that person. I also think it's about that bitter feeling that you feel knowing that you lost the fight for that person and his or her approval and love the minute you began it. I have felt this many times. But, in a sense, that time wasn't wasted. That time that was wasted helped me realize that life is way too short to be chasing and trying to please someone that doesn't even feel the same way about you. So, the time I wasted doing that saved me more time... I shouldn't type when I'm tired... lol. |

| Oingo Boingo – Capitalism Lyrics | 15 years ago |
| The songwriter himself said this was about the Socialist attitude that The Clash brought to the scene. And frankly, it's very true. I've yet to meet a socialist who actually went through the crap they talk about (being poor, "The Man", being discriminated against, etc). I've experienced all those things and I'm still the heartless a-hole that I was to begin with. God Bless Capitalism. | |
