| Silverstein – One Last Dance Lyrics | 9 years ago |
|
I think the whole song is a metaphor for the end of a relationship and the hope of it actually getting better again. The protagonist and his partner had a bad argument in the first verse and stopped talking to each other but he has the hope his/her partner starts the conversation again. The "last dance" is a metaphor for "trying to save the relationship" once again but the protagonist is not willing to start it (again), which is the meaning of the "In the morning I'll be gone But not because I didn't want to"-line. |

| Funeral for a Friend – Moments Forever Faded Lyrics | 9 years ago |

Just went on their last show tonight. Matt said the song is about abusive relationships. He said that if someone has nothing left but his love, but his love hurts him physically, you should let go of that love. To go for it line by line > In the black and white, wounds all bound Explicitly stating one person in the relationship is physically hurt - which is shown by the bandage > Sitting at the table, biting nails all short The person doesn't know what to do and is nervous > The consequence of adultery > As he rips you from your skin I think this can be interpreted in two ways. Either the abusive person literally cuts the other person for whatever fucked up reason or by abusing the other person, slowly destroys the core of the other person ("rips >you< from your skin"). > We're all paying for this and in your prayers > You believe Not sure about who is "we" here tbh. > You believe, you believe (just for the first time) > You believe, you believe (just like the last time) > You believe, you believe (a seam away from breaking) > You believe, you believe (always forever) The abused person does believe it will still work out and that she/he should stay with the abusive person although the same shit happens over and over. > Tasting you for the first time, just to breathe you in > Breaking you for the first time, bathed in sin This might actually be written out of the view of the abusive person. > The embers will burn you, will burn you tonight I think this is about how all wounds eventually heal but they will leave scars - and not just on your body but also on your soul. The wounds are represented by the "embers" and if the flame up, you will burn. I think it's a dilemma for the abused person. Either the flames stat spreading because she stays and there will be more and more embers or if she/he leaves, she/he is leaving behind who she/he loved, which is also painful. |

| Funeral for a Friend – Your Revolution Is A Joke Lyrics | 9 years ago |
| I just came from the last concert they will ever play (it was absolutely amazing) and Matt said about the song it's about the media and how they always have their own agenda. And this agenda is usually set by rich people who own or influence the media so they write for the agenda of the rich and powerful. | |

| In Flames – Delight and Angers Lyrics | 10 years ago |
|
I learned that In Flames songs are very often about drugs and this one could be another one about it, specifically how someone who tries to quit drugs experiences life. "Everyday takes figuring out how to live, Sometimes it feels like a mistake, Sometimes its a winners parade, Delight and angers, I guess thats the way its supposed to be..." Every day the speaker fights to resist taking drugs again. Sometimes he succeeds, sometimes he doesn't. If he doesn't, he is angry at himself later. But he guesses that those small wins and losses are how it has to be. "Please heal me, I cant sleep Thought I was unbreakable, but this is killing me Call me, everything Make me fell unbreakable, lie and set me free" Most drugs mess with your sleep and hunger feeling. A lot of them also make you feel invincible. But after you came down, you realize you are not and the desire to take the drug again is killing you and doesn't let you sleep. The lyrical I wants to be healed from that desire. "I feel the fear takes hold Affraid this hell I create is my own Calm my franticness, I cant take it anymore This used to be my own world, but now I've lost control" In his ecstasy with the drugs he created his own world where he had full control. But he realized it destroys him from the inside because it's fucking with his psyche. "Chasing leftovers, Under the fading sun, Searching for shelter, I feel my time has come" He tries to collect all leftovers from his drug just before he "dies" (not sure about that one). |

| We Are The Ocean – Look Alive Lyrics | 10 years ago |
|
I think this song is quite literal. It's about growing up and growing to be the person you really are, understand who you really are. "I am hoping that today I'll learn how to live my life But I can't, can't, can't see past this crowd," The speaker wants to finally be himself but he can't see "past the crows" with their expectations of him and what they like. There is a tension between the desire to being liked by (all) people and being yourself. "I'm always looking for an answer, something to tell me who I am And I'm always looking to the mirror, there's no one there so I'll pretend." Lyrical I wants to know who he is but if he "looks" at himself, he don't know who he is, so he just pretends to be someone else. "I don't want to be like everyone else, They by the same rules, they've got it all figured out. Follow me through the crowd right now, follow me through the crowd right now." There is a also the desire to be something special. The author thinks everyone's got figured out who they are and why the do the things they do (they tell him to "follow him through the crow" so they give him advice or "show him the right way"). In reality, though, no-one knows shit and everyone is insecure - some are just better in hiding it. "Let's all make out that we're somebody else," Speaker realizes how no-one is really themselves. |

| In Flames – Take This Life Lyrics | 11 years ago |
|
In Flames lyrics are basically never straight forward so I think this song is NOT about suicide. Others have written here it is about a boy who loves a girl but she doesn't love him back and I think there is a good chance this is one or the meaning of the song. I'll explain: "It's not so much the pain It's more the actual knife Pretending the picture is perfect I cut myself to sleep" I think the knife is the girl itself. The pain doesn't hit him that much but knowing she doesn't feel the same for him. So he just imagines everything is perfect and will fall to sleep while thinking of her all the time. "I close my eyes for a second And curse my fragile soul I scream to hide that I'm lonely The echo calls my name" Depression leads to aggression. But in the end he realizes he is at fault not the girl (He is screaming his own name because he is angry with himself). "If I ever, If I never Make me understand the thought whatever Make me see. Make me be Make me understand you're there for me" I think this is about him thinking about doing something but never actually doing. He just imagines all the outcomes instead of taking the risk of trying. I have no idea about the last line though - it seems contradictory to the rest of the lyrics to me. "The rain drops just beg to hit me What now? Hasn't rained for days" He starts crying. "No time to play hide-and-seek I call on you to take me on Break me down to pieces Put me back, do it right this time" He has enough of hiding and starts talking to her about his feelings. Apparently she didn't leave him with a good answer the last time he talked with her about that (maybe she wasn't able to tell him she doesn't love him). Now he wants to learn the "bitter truth". "Struggling to fill this empty shell Burn all my efforts In the end it means nothing" He is feeling empty inside after she tells him she really doesn't love him but he also realizes it doesn't matter - not knowing if she was loving him was the real problem. Ignorance is not bliss in this case. "These thoughts, burn a hole in my heart These thoughts, will keep me free and" Knowing you are not loved by someone you love hurts but actually knowing this and calling this person on it will also make you free. |

I think this song is about the feeling of unconsciousness and powerlessness. In the first verse, the narrator is looking in the mirror, sees himself and notices that he "can't get up" - he is falling and so he is "out of control". But despite that fact, his reflection looks good, so he asks it whether he could show him a place where he feels the same way as he looks. In the second verse, the narrator again speaks about that he is out of control of his actions ("where am I heading?!") and he wishes a place to stay and feel save (= haven). Then he asks himself for what he is punished like this and asks how he can escape this helplessness. In the third verse, the narrator feels that he is a slave to his "nature" and his action just follow his instincts and he waits for them to lead him again. Then in the chorus the narrator again talks about not knowing what happens to him and it happens to him and that his only thoughts are staying alive - but he is not really "living" a human life and thus "living a lie" In the last verse the narrator tells us that time is also against him and is making him feel he's always too late for everything in life. The narrator cannot break out of his state of powerlessness - he is inferior to his "natural" instincts and to the limitlessness of time and eventually to his mortality. |

| Kings of Convenience – Cayman Islands Lyrics | 12 years ago |
|
I think the most obvious interpretation is to assume the song is about a couple traveling through Amsterdam (apparently the song was first named "The Amsterdam Song"). "Through the alleyways to cool off in the shadows, then into the street following the water." It's apparently a hot day for the narrator and his significant other (SO). They are going through the alleys and cooling off in the shadows of the buildings. After that they enter a street and follow one of the canals (="Grachten") "There's a bearded man paddling in his canoe, looks as if he has come all the way from the Cayman Islands." Apparently there was a man in one of the Grachten in a canoe. I don't know exactly why the Cayman Islands but maybe his beard was just huge and he had a dark tan? Or he wore a shirt which said "Cayman Islands" "These canals, it seems, they all go in circles" If you've been to Amsterdam, you know that they ARE going in circles - they call them "rings". "places look the same, and we're the only difference." And if you're the first time in Amsterdam, you'll probably feel like that. At least I felt like that, too. The narrator has only eyes for his SO, that's why only they make a difference in this same looking city. "The wind is in your hair, it's covering my view. I'm holding on to you, on a bike we've hired until tomorrow." They rented a bike together. Apparently the girl is driving while the narrator is on the back of the bike. "If only they could see, if only they had been here, they would understand, how someone could have chosen to go the length I've gone, to spend just one day riding. Holding on to you, I never thought it would be this clear." I wasn't sure about this part. It seems to be some kind of apologetic talk first. But I wasn't sure what the narrator wants to explain: Why he only held ONE day to her? Why he only spend ONE day riding? Why he only spend ONE day riding WITH HER? Why he went that far? Obviously, the narrator is not able to answer that question himself. He just "did it" without overthinking the moment. But one other person here said it's postcard reminiscence and I also think that this is a very good explanation. So this is the obvious interpretation. But I also think that there must be some metaphorical interpretation as well. The "Cayman Island" guy and naming the song after it just seemed TOO random to me. So here we go: "Through the alleyways to cool off in the shadows, then into the street following the water." Maybe their relationship and themselves are "going along" and if the relationship "heats up", they go into the "shadow" (maybe that means that they chose not to see each other for a while). The street might be a metaphor for "going the next bigger step" together. There is no end in streaming water. So together with the street this might mean a step to a bigger commitment (so, e.g. marriage). "There's a bearded man paddling in his canoe, looks as if he has come all the way from the Cayman Islands" I think the bearded man is the narrator himself. He left his partner for a long time (hence the beard) and tried to escape any commitment (if people want to avoid the commitment for paying taxes, they go to the Cayman Islands). Now he came back on his own after thinking about the relationship for a longer time (hence the canoe which only the bearded man is able to control). "These canals, it seems, they all go in circles," Might refer to always coming to the same point in a relationship. Maybe also refers to the drab monotony of everyday life that might arise in a relationship. "places look the same, and we're the only difference." I think this refers to the same as the lines before. Also, when you travel a lot, you will notice that a lot of cities ARE looking very similar (not only because they are dominated by global companies). "The wind is in your hair, it's covering my view." The wind might be a metaphor for everything that is happening that is not in their power. Because of narrators SO and her actions, he isn't able to see where to go. He didn't know where their relationship would go or still doesn't know. "I'm holding on to you, on a bike we've hired until tomorrow." He commits himself to her - but only for a very short time. Their relationship is going fast ("bike"). "If only they could see, if only they had been here, they would understand, how someone could have chosen to go the length I've gone, to spend just one day riding. Holding on to you I never thought it would be this clear" That's again pretty apologetic. The narrator wants to explain why he has been to "the Cayman Islands" for so long and do this whole journey ("the length I've gone) and don't commits himself to his SO. Actually, the narrator doesn't understand it either and hence commits himself to her |

| Lostprophets – To Hell We Ride Lyrics | 12 years ago |

Forgot to mention that I think that the persona isn't sure about the status of his/her relationship with the other person. How can you feel sure about being together with someone else if you don't even know what you want? |

| Lostprophets – To Hell We Ride Lyrics | 12 years ago |

I'm pretty sure the lyrics are about a relationship of the persona with a person that does not know what he/she wants to achieve in life. A person, who always wants more but never actually does something for it, who wants to try all kind of stuff but never actually does and gets lost in all those alternatives (sums up in first verse) The persona wonders how he/she manages to live his/her life without actually knowing where to go (second part of chorus) I think the second verse talks about how the person does not go through with her/his actions. He/She starts something (slight hint to album title?) but "runs out of breath" - just like a fire from which only embers remain. And because the person doesn't live its life (or act in certain aspects) with all his/her heart, he/she doesn't grow as person - and is therefore "right back at the start" and has "already lost it". The last part is the part which made me think the lyrics are about a relationship ("I often wonder how you feel /// When you're lying next to me"). Sadly, I can't make sense of the "it's too early /// don't live your life" (What is too early? Why shouldn't the person live her/his life?) and "you know it's not enough part" (What is not enough for what?) - but I'm sure someone is able to explain that as well. |
