The Milk Carton Kids – Michigan Lyrics 11 years ago
I think the general theme of this song is talking about what happens when something with a lot of promise turns to crap. The song specifically mentions Pontiac Michigan, "broke down brake lines," and motown records. Pontiac is a suburb of Detroit that once had a GM plant and an car brand named after it..The town still exists but that's it. Detroit is a shell of what it once was after the collapse of the auto industry. Motown was the pinnacle of pop music is the 60's, and as a stand alone record company, doesn't really exist anymore. I'm not sure exactly what "brake lines" are, but my mind goes to railroads for some reason. Anyway, we are told they are broke down anyways, keeping with the theme of stuff going to crap.

Take the feeling of watching the demise of something fantastic, and apply it to a relationship that you are in and there's the song. The relationship was good, now it's crap, there's a tug of what once was every time she calls or knocks on the door unexpectedly, but in the end it's best to let the thing die and move on.

Just my $.02.

Mumford & Sons – Little Lion Man Lyrics 15 years ago
Initially, I just thought this song was about a break up or something. After listening to it some more I began to wonder if this in fact was the case. I found the little interview where Marcus said it was difficult to explain (which a break up really isn't that difficult to explain), and after reading his ramblings on the song and some posts on this board, I do tend to think its a father/son thing.

I think the first verse is the father talking to/about his son, and the second is the father referring to himself, but they're both little lion men. To me it makes sense as 'weep' is softer and sort of denotes that the cause of the sadness is not that big where as 'tremble' indicates that the problem is much larger and brings to mind fear, rather than sadness. As far as the chorus goes, it makes sense to me that the first two lines are directed to the kid and the second, to the kid's mother.

To me, it seems that the lion men are bitter, angry and full of rage, but also lack the courage/confidence to express and handle their emotions in a healthy way. They also lack the understanding of why they behave the way they do.

I think the older lion man, in consoling his son, begins to see the root of the problem, but still lacks the confidence to take steps toward correcting the problem. Perhaps the older lion man also had issues with his father and is seeing the cycle repeat itself. I guess to put it another way, the older lion man is so used to failure that he is paralyzed by fear even though he is beginning to understand that by being a good father he could remedy the situation, but he does not know how to do this.

I think the kid is angry/pissed that his father is not around, but sort of finds comfort in his anger and most likely made it known that he blames the father for his problems. The kid, though, probably has confidence issues especially around his peers which adds to the whole "I'm pissed but I don't know what to do" emo sort of thing. If the father all of the sudden tried to re-build the relationship the kid would have to swallow his pride and find a way to accept and love his father. He does not know how to do this.

I think the ahh ahh section indicates a sort of moment of clarity, mutual understanding, or perhaps just the passage of time. Regardless, it indicates a sort of resolution to the problem. In the final chorus, both lion men are talking to each other, but it is a powerful emotional event as indicated by the increased tempo and attack of the music during that part of the song. I think in the end, they forgive/accept each other for who they are and recognize that they each need the other in their lives.

I could be wrong but that's the beauty of poetry.
