From my perspective this song is about someone growing old and feeling trapped in an industry town. A town that was once thriving but is now struggling. The mines closed, the oil dried up and the industry moved away. Nw you have kids growing up here not knowing any differently. To them it's not a struggle because they didn't know good it was before. They just see it as one big playground, surrounded by a close knit community. The older man wants to leave but has no means or opportunity. He can only wait until his time runs out. |

This song and Strange Tourist are my favourite off the album. The first few times I listened to the song it seemed to be about a family friend he's known for a long time. He can see her beauty and value to others but he's also seen how vapid she and her Father are. They have a tendency to ruin the relationships around them in their own pursuits. Gareth still finds himself going out of his way to accommodate her but then her Father reminds him of his place. And in those actions he see's how ruthless and callous she can be also. |
