Maybe "Slight Return" does refer to "I'm coming home, but just for a short while" at the end of the song, but maybe it's also to acknowledge that the main hook is very similar to that of the Beatles' And I Love Her. |

I wonder if it is about Marylin Monroe, hence "Diamond", "they said she did it with grace, they said she did it with style... I remember [her]" and the manner of her death described is metaphorical. |

| Dire Straits – The Man's Too Strong Lyrics
| 15 years ago

As others have said, Knopfler is British with a Jewish father. So it is likely to be about the Nazis and the Nuremburg trials.
"The man" in this case is the Jewish people, "too big", "too strong" to be broken by what the Nazis did, "his laughter" and "his song" continue after it. I cannot figure out a meaning to "your sister gave me diamonds and I give them to your wife", other than that "he" remained scrupulously honest and this is another aspect of how "he" was too big and too strong to have his spirit broken. Suspect Knopfler wasn't quite happy with this rough and ready line hence he changes it in the Wembley Arena performance. |
