If you read his memoir, he talks about weed dealers in the east village who whisper "smoke ... sinse ... smoke ... sinse ..." so I think that's what he's saying, not 'scent' or 'sense' as seems to be written often.

you ever notice how just before Danzig says 'mommy can i go out and kill tonight' you hear somebody else say the lines just before him? i dunno if it was an accident (misfits were never know for being sticklers in the studio) but if it was on purpose it's like a voice in his head telling him to kill.

i also think it's a father-son thing. I'm not sure if the quotes in the above lyrics are correct, i always thought lines like "I've grown taller now" was the boy speaking; his father has been gone so long he doesn't recognize his home and son until it is too late.

Joy Division – The Sound Of Music Lyrics

this is a great example of a song with very direct lyrics, that works well. sometimes songwriters keep things purposefully vague or flowery. this one is just so straightforward, no subtext needed. and as for the last lines, the irony here is the protagonist is acutely aware of how love of life can make one feel 'higher' but he himself is unable to get there. Thus he suffers doubly. love the guitar on this song, all rhythm and no melody, sounds like an industrial grinder!
