Michael Penn – No Myth (Romeo in Black Jeans) Lyrics 7 months ago
I think this song is about a one night stand that he was hoping would be more, but she doesn’t want it - she just wanted the one night stand.

Toad the Wet Sprocket – Crowing Lyrics 10 years ago
This song is about a bittersweet love story.
The first words explain that they started as friends, but one person wants to take it to the next level, but the other can't make up their mind and one in love is ready to move on, but can't if there's a chance at love with him/her. They eventually become lovers, but she/he realizes she/he can't fix his/her problems and they break up. To get over it she/he is sleeping with others to try to get over regrets, but the memory of him/her is still there under the bed (perhaps in a box of pictures or objects from their relationship). I think in the context of the song this is a pattern of many relationships for her/him not just one.

As time goes by, the memory of those past lovers fade but there is still regret for not making any of them work and the last stanza in the song tells us why.

"Staring a cold little hand..." The love that one of the relationships shared produced a child, but one of them is forever gone from the relationship and is left asking questions to anyone who will listen (reading fault lines - palm reading, Mystics, horoscopes; waiting for a word from above - God, other deities) but they never have an answer because all along the person they needed to fix was themselves.

My sense is this finally reveal as the perspective of the man in all these relationships because of the line "...of a shell of a man..." He's just an image of who he was, and he's lost what makes him a man on this inside - his confidence in himself. He's single father now and has no idea what to do or who he is. He lacked the self confidence to be a better man and made these decisions in life thinking he was always helping someone else, when who really needed the help was himself.

Toad the Wet Sprocket – Way Away Lyrics 10 years ago
It's about a boy at a funeral. Who has probably lost his father or mother. He's young, maybe 13 or 14 and he's watching all the older people pass by and say there fake goodbyes - because none of them were ever there... Until now. He just wants to get away. Way away. And mourn on his own terms.
Very deep and powerful song.

Band of Horses – No One's Gonna Love You Lyrics 11 years ago
I've been really thinking about the meaning to this song and it hit me today on maybe the 1,000 listen. The beauty of a good song is that we place our life experiences into the meaning of the song and take solace in the connection it brings. So I think everyone here has posted a real meaning behind the song. That said, what hit me today was something I hadn't thought about before:

I wonder if he's talking to himself. Consoling himself after a tough break up - he's saying that even though it feels like a limb has been ripped off, and that someone should have told him this was coming, it's not his fault, and that above all else, he still truly loves himself, even if he's spending his time living as the ghost of what was once. Because no one can ever love him more than he does - loving yourself is a big step towards getting over a past deep relationship and recognizing that you are who you are and you should be proud of that. I think this song is capturing that moment when you transition from feeling sorry for yourself to realizing that you have a purpose in life and that you love who you are and no one can take that away from you.

"Pull on the borders to lighten the load"

I think that's wrong - it's "Call on the porters to lighten the load" Porters would be on ships and would be in charge of luggage and bulk weight. Lightening the load would be to cast off dead weight so the boat could sail faster...

Vampire Weekend – Cousins Lyrics 15 years ago
"You and the smart one sit outside of their sight,
In a house on a street they wouldn't park on at night."

I don't think the house on the street is a reference to crime, but rather a posh suburban community or gated community. In those sort of places, nearly everyone has a garage and driveway, so it's more uncommon, and in some more "exclusive" place frowned upon to park in the street overnight. It would be considered "lower class".

I think this take falls into better line with the anti-snob overtures in their music.

Vampire Weekend – Ottoman Lyrics 15 years ago
I think the song is told through the eyes of a former boyfriend, lover, that has come to her wedding. Maybe they broke up because he was not part of the same social class, but he knows that her marriage doesn't feel right because it should be him. I don't think he's the one getting married. I think he's on the outside looking in and rueing that she made the wrong decision, but he still loves her.
