| The lyrics are spot in -- your missing words are "Above a gulf of hamstrung promises you sang like Auld Lang Syne". | |

I think it's "watched as my sandcastle slowly was turned into GLASS" -- definitely hear the 's' sound at the end of the word, and it makes sense, since sand does turn to glass. I also hear "phantom waves" -- in fact, I think the line is "I'm still hearing phantom waves". The first two verses are in the past tense, and the setting is clearly a beach ("fell to the water", "sandcastle"...and in the next verse "me by the shore"), so when the chorus switches to present tense, she's remembering that day in the present, and the line "I'm still hearing phantom waves" would suggest that the day on the beach was so significant and memorable, in her head she can still hear the sound of the ocean. Also, I believe it's: A shallow river by the road Smoothed its edges and turned it to a skipping stone. |

| The New Pornographers – Crash Years Lyrics | 15 years ago |

To me, the song is a sympathetic note to someone who's being openly criticized by everyone around them for a mistake they made, or a humiliating experience they're going through. I think the chorus of "Traffic was slow for the crash years" calls to mind an accident on the highway that causes traffic to slow down so everyone can get a look at what happened. "There's no other show like it round here" = everyone's enjoying watching and commenting on this person's troubles. The singer's sympathetic stance is apparent in the way she insinuates "the rest of us" have got our own mistakes and bad choices to live with: "You're ruined, like the rest of us, ruined." And everyone has a bad time dealing with them: "And like the rest of us, you've got those old eternity blues." Basically, it seems this is a note to say "I'm on your side, and it sucks that you have to endure everyone talking smack about you." Which is why she ruefully states: "Tonight will be an open mic" -- that is, everyone who wants to will say whatever they want about you. |
