The Smiths – That Joke Isn't Funny Anymore Lyrics 14 years ago
The song isn’t about a specific loss or relationship.. it’s sung to the listener by a very lonely, depressed person whose at the end of his rope. At some time in his life he’d laughed and made fun of the socially inept that lacked the skills to hook up… but he’s not laughing anymore … he’s at that very point in his life and he’s experiencing the pain of that loneliness first hand.. and the jokes aren’t funny anymore.. He deals with his pain and loneliness by self-medicating.. shooting smack.. and he’s parked on some deserted road shooting up… He knows he could OD and not come back.. and it makes him smile at the thought of escaping the loneliness. He might die with a smile on his face after all.

Dishwalla – Counting Blue Cars Lyrics 14 years ago
The song takes place in several different periods of a person’s life.. Where dawn is birth, the beginning, and night is the end.

In the first verse he talks about the midmorning and a child asking some of the first BIG questions. Is there a God.. and if so, what my relationship to him? He only has a couple broad questions at this point.

In the second verse we hear from the storyteller directly. From his perspective it’s late afternoon and his life is still carefree. He’s older but and still has the same questions but has fleshed them out. He’s formed an image of God. Here’s what he’d like to ask her.. He discovered and accepted his mortality and knows at the end of the road he’ll meet her.

In the third and last verse, it’s getting cold.. (sounds like I’m getting old..) .. Time’s flying faster.. life isn’t so carefree..It’s been a bit harsh.. He’s a bit worn.. but he still has the questions for God.. the eternal questions that we all ask and all look for answers to.. How did we get here? Where are we going? Why are we who we are..

Blind Melon – The Pusher (Steppenwolf cover) Lyrics 15 years ago
A few comments:
1. This isnt a 'cover' of the Steppenwolf song, though it borrows from it.
The Steppenwolf piece expressed anger toward the Pusher that sells death vi-a-vis
smack addiction. The Blind Melon version piece expresses anger towards the
pusher of religion, a different kind of addiction. Shannon has visited this theme
more than once. (eg Holy Man, etc)He appears to have had some serious issues with
religion or religious people.

2. The line "Pink Dot will deliver" is incorrect. I've seen this around the net.
Pink Dot is an LA company.. Doesnt jive with the line before.. No snow in LA..
Doesnt even get particularly cold.. Doesnt jive with the theme of the song in general.
Line should read: "If I'm hungry at 4:30 in the morning, think God will deliver ?"
(i.e. when he's hungry will G-d put food in his belly?"
