Started listening to A Rush Of Blood To The Head again recently. Always loved Clocks, but when I was listening to it this time around I realized I didn't know what the song was about. "You are..." what? As far as I can tell, the song starts off with those inevitable nightly thoughts - "Lights go out and I can't be saved." There are a lot images of darkness and fear that follow - the tides that have brought him down to his knees, troubles that can't be named, tigers waiting to be tamed. There are closing walls, ticking clocks (both metaphors for dying). Everything here is darkness and fear, self-doubt and world weariness. Then he sings "You are" on a high note, repeatedly between the fears, like it's lifting him up, lighting the dark. Finally the "You are" is followed by "Home, home, where I wanted to go" which is then mixed with "You are". This seems to tie them together. And I feel these two lines together are the key to understanding the song. these together and it all seems to make sense. The You in the song is his savior, the person who makes those fears and troubles less. She is home. |

| The song is about Ric being completely head over heels for a chick, but she's only interested in seeing him when she's in the mood. He tells her "all I need is what you've got" and how "he's flying like a cement kite" when he's around her. It would appear they have sex - "uh oh, I touched your star" and "it felt so right" but then she says "with me, it's touch and go." And that phrase is banging around in his head as the song fades out. He wants to love her so badly, but she was only into him for the moment. | |

Being in the situation I'm in now, I have a very different interpretation of "Drive" than I've had in the past. I think the correct interpretation of this song is one of a troubled, one-sided relationship, but it's not about breaking up. The singer's constant query "who's gonna (...)"isn't asking 'now that I'm gone, who's going to look after you.' He's reminding his love that he will be there no matter what. He will pick her up, hold her, drive her home though she completely takes him for granted now. Perhaps the love is now one-sided, but he soldiers on because it's not in his nature to give up on her. Possibly in time, things will change, but from where he stands now, it doesn't look bright. Truly a heartbreaking song of love and devotion. |

Absolutely. When I sat and listened to the lyrics yesterday, this was the same interpretation I got. Stuck in a bomb shelter with nowhere to go and nothing to do, but wait. Always love the upbeat downer songs. :) |
