Simply Red – Holding Back The Years Lyrics 13 years ago
I believe that the Lyric "Holding Back the Years" is about
a period of time in the past and presently not taking action
in his life in making it better due to fear of self worth, accomplishment
and success.
I think this is a song about a person that was mentally abused by his parents
where the parents did not wish their child to succeed in life, leaving the now adult
with fears of success and really living a happy life due to the abuse.

"Chance for me to escape from all I know"
meaning he needs to get away from the destructive thoughts and fears he learned from
the negative upbringing.

Genesis – Me And Sarah Jane Lyrics 13 years ago
I agree with Screegee and Ivmuzic.

I have things to add.
I do believe this was about a homeless mans soulmate or imaginary soulmate due to being lonely.
I think this a direct connection from "Lonely Man on the Corner". These songs are connected.
Even down to the simailar musical motif at the beginning of the song, Lonely Man and Sarah Jane are
almost identical.

Anyway, i beieve the man was the lonely homeless person, and lived his life in his own reality and invented
an imaginary soulmate "Sarah Jane" .
I also thing they were trying to say that he was manic depressive possible in this lyric

"Searching for a clue.
Traces on the sand.
First I'm flying, going round round round,
Then I'm sliding going down down down,
Doesn't matter where I start I always end up
Falling through those same old crowded rooms"

Many schizophrenics and manics look for things that aren't really there
until they find something that was created in there own head.
Almost like, thinking too much.

It does make sense,
that he invented his soulmate so he could die happy.

Spandau Ballet – Gold Lyrics 13 years ago
I think this is a non-political love song. like most Spandeau songs.

I think he's referring to his ex lover as his heroine in his life. Him referring to her
as "gold" meaning his luck, or pot of gold to him leaving him standing tall.

"Partners in crime" meaning at the time, the love was possibly forbidden for
reasons unknown. Maybe because the two were too focused on careers "suit and the pace"
and his love being like a "high prison wall" meaning he had barriers for her not to be able to
be with him. He's proud of her for being able to climb the wall and beleive in the soul
over the mind to finally return.

I think the song is about him finally being able to admit his love and hoping she will return
and he's proud of her for being strong enough to do that even though things are jaded "chairs are all worn".

Thompson Twins – If You Were Here Lyrics 13 years ago
I agree with voydlander.

He is trapped in the relationship and lies to her to spare her feelings.
He wants out, and states "My emotion wandering, yeah" (for another girl)
and he'll spend time on repair for missing her but
"I'll be always falling, yeah" (meaning he's going to fall for someone else)
"Only to rise and fall again" (he keeps falling in and out of love.)
It is sad, for both.
Why in the hell would they place this song at the end of Sixteen Candles?!!

Love the song though.
