@[matute88:18782] Nice try. The 4:20 reference came long after this song was written.

@[michaelde:18781] I probably could talk to you for hours concerning Aqualung. I have studied this album extensively since its release. You are of course correct that Ian had denied that Aqualung is a concept album. I respectfully disagree. But that's a discussion for another time. I really enjoyed your interpretation of "Up To Me.".

@[damnedher0:18779] wow... Very creative interpretation. I like it. There is a difference between interpretation and "this song reminds me of..."

Steely Dan – The Royal Scam Lyrics 13 years ago
I understand the attraction of Aja...its sophistication...complexity and musicianship. However, there is something about The Royal Scam...the hard edge...the guitars...the anger. Some of us believe that The Royal Scam represents the last of the old Dan...the change. Arguably, the best SD album of them all. -P

Thanks for sharing the "lost verse." It does lend itself to even more meanings.

I would have to agree that the Royal Scam is arguably their best work. I understand the attraction of Aja...the sophistication and I would be hard-pressed to say it isn't their best offering. However, there is something about The Royal Scam..its edge, its cynicism...the harder rock. I've always been drawn to the harder side of the Dan...the Rock n Roll side...the blazing guitars...the hard lyrics. The Royal Scam...certainly one of their best. -P

I have to completely agree that it is set in the environment of a Nazi youth rally. I have always felt that "chain lightening" referred to the double "S" on the uniforms.

Steely Dan – Time Out of Mind Lyrics 15 years ago
I have been fascinated with SD lyrics for many years. I started trying to interpret them before I knew that others were doing the same. I happened on a site called "Fever Dreams" which posted interpretations. Not sure that it still exists.

"Time Out Of Mind" has always drawn my attention because I think it is purposely written for two meanings. I do not put it by SD to be so clever as to write a song that uses one interpretation as a vehicle for another interpretation.

I'm sort of surprised that no one else has put forward this understanding of the song.

No doubt that Time Out Of Mind is about drugs. That has been clearly supported. However, I think that the drug angle is presented in an environment of a religious revival. This shouldn't be too far a reach. After all, a believe that it was a Chinese philosopher that stated "religion is the opiate of the people."

Supporting the religious revival angle:

On this glory day
This is your chance to believe
What I've got to say

Clearly this is preacher speaking (as they do) to "believe."

Keep your eyes on the sky
Put a dollar in the kitty

Self-evident....
Look to the heavens
Contribute to the church

The water may change to cherry wine

Changing water to wine as Jesus did

Children we have it right here
It's the light in my eyes
It's perfection and grace

Children (children of God)
"Light" in my eyes
Perfection and grace of God

...and so on.

Yes...of course, it is all drug related as stated by other posts. However, we cannot avoid the vehicle of "religion."

Just my 2 cents.
