He isn\'t subtle. This appears to be a song of lust.

Nils Lofgren – Keith Don't Go (Ode to the Glimmer Twin) Lyrics 3 years ago
Clearly a love letter to Keith Richards. He mentions the loss of Jimi (Hendrix) and it seems he was worried that we'd lose Keith too. With the perspective of time, it seems he didn't need to worry as Keith Richards is still climbing coconut treas and playing rock. Nils Lofgren seems like a musician's musician who isn't jealous of other musicians and celebrates them.

Nanci Griffith – Ten Degrees and Getting Colder Lyrics 3 years ago
Someone on the GL version wrote that this song details a down on his luck man near Hoover Dam who went west looking for his life and failed. It details the hopelessness felt has everything passes you by and you're stuck standing still, hopes and dreams deferred and the only thing you feel is the icy chill of failure and neglect.

It seems he had found a woman who was a good match and maybe so when it was warm out at Boulder dam. But at the end, he's sold his Martin guitar and he's stuck out at 10 degrees. The temperature is a metaphor for how life is going.

I used to listen to this w my sister in her 3 speed AMC dragging main. The sentiment is that record companies are financially and morally corrupt. Seems nothing has changed.

The Pretenders – Middle Of The Road (version 1) Lyrics 4 years ago
I agree this song is about middle age and coming to terms with life and maybe recognizing the world for what it is despite youthful ideals. Middle of the road seems like a phrase to mean living in balance and even keel.

The section about rich guys driving through the slums seems like she's saying this is how the world is and what can you do. A biblical phrase comes to mind - The poor you will always have with you and that is true today as it was 2000 years ago.

She also said she has a smile for everyone as long as they don't mistreat her. It seems a sentiment of live and let live or maybe live and let die. She has her hands full with her job, her kid, her life and she's just trying to do her best and will treat you well if you treat her well.

Mary Gauthier – Drag Queens in Limousines Lyrics 4 years ago
This song must resonate with a lot of people. Who didn't hate high school at one point or another.

It is about being an outsider and how painful that can be when people like your family reject you or don't understand you. It finds hope in finding people who accept you for who you are.

Ed Sheeran – Don't Lyrics 6 years ago
It seems like he had a little fling and then fell for her and even though she'd told him from the start that it wasn't serious, he felt hurt. Isn't that how it goes. You don't have control over who you love. Sex has an edge.

The Jam – Going Underground Lyrics 7 years ago
Welcome to Donald fuck. I guess things don't change much.

You've made your bed, you better lie in it
You choose your leaders and place your trust
As their lies wash you down and their promises rust
You'll see kidney machines replaced by rockets and guns
And the public wants what the public gets
But I don't get what this society wants

Mark Knopfler – Fare Thee Well Northumberland Lyrics 8 years ago
DGreat mood in this song. The story gives a outline of his unhappiness leaving Northumbeland but he admits life takes him where it will and his person likes to ramble. So many details of his life left out which lends an air of mystery to this guy. He seems like a guy who's had his share of heartbreak and regret.

Suzanne Vega – (I'll Never Be) Your Maggie May Lyrics 9 years ago
She sees him for what he is - just a guy who wants an attractive women to sleep with but has no intentions for a serious relationship.

The second part about ladies in Japan seems like she is saying that she doesn't want to open herself to this guy because he'll make a fool of her. Put on a mask to protect yourself and keep her dignity from an exploitative man.

She seems somewhat tempted by this guy. But then she says Would you ever see within? Underneath the skin? Could I believe you had that sight? She thinks he is just looking at her looks and body but doesn't see her person.

When I hear this song, I wonder if she is poking fun at Rod Stewart's song Maggie Mae where he portrays Maggie as an older woman who is taking advantage of the younger mail narrator and keeping him from getting on with his life. In Vega's song, she's not going to wait around for that treatment.

Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers – Joe Lyrics 9 years ago
A dour look at the music industry. Pop stars come and go but Joe keeps getting richer. In recent times, it seems that the machine is working with ever more efficiency. Artists like Kesha or Britney seem to fit the model.

Neko Case – Rated X Lyrics 10 years ago
The song is pretty clear but has some clever lines.
> but I think it's wrong to judge every picture
> if a cheap camera makes a mistake
The theme of the song is that divorced women are looked down on but if the husband was a skunk then it's understandabe and she wouldn't hold it against her.

> and if you're rated x you're some kind of gold
> even men turning silver try to make
Despite the put downs, mean see a divorced woman as an object of desire and think they can get her even if she's clearly a class above them.

> and when your best friend's husband says to you
> you've sure started lookin' good
> you should've known he would
> and he would if he could and he will
> if you're rated x
This really reveals the double standard in society condemning a woman. The husband of her friend would have sex with her behind his wife's back and talk bad about her to his wife. The divorced woman can be taken advantage of.

I think this explanation is best. She insults him over and over and he promises to return the favor.

Whiskeytown – Faithless Street Lyrics 10 years ago
The song seems straightforward. He is feeling alone with no one to watch over him. The commentary focuses on god never showing him any grace.

The lyric 'He (Christ) never shed his peace on this land So I started this damn country band Cause punk rock was too hard to sing' is a testament to the affinity between alt country and punk rock.

Jim Croce – Operator (That's Not the Way It Feels) Lyrics 10 years ago
So many good things about this song. Of course it resonates with people but the subtle phrasing is great.

It seems like he relies on the operator, a total stranger to talk about his problem. I'm sure more than a few real operators have had such confessionals and it also seems common for someone who has had their heart broken to go babbling about it to anyone who will listen. Kind of pathetic but he knows it but what can he do.

When he says 'See, the number on the matchbook is old and faded.' is really means that she's moved on and she is no longer at that number. The term faded is a good metaphor, as in faded memories.

The line 'She's living in L.A. with my best old ex-friend Ray' says a lot about friendships and how a lover can bring betrayal and divide friends. Who hasn't lost a friend in some similiar way.

The line 'A guy she said she knew well and sometimes hated' is telling. How often is it that two people start out hating each other but that that feeling masks a underlying attraction.

The line 'So I can call just to tell 'em I'm fine and to show I've overcome the blow, I've learned to take it well' - he knows even in the song that he's lying to himself. This aspect of love reminds me an addiction like quitting cigarettes. I once tried to quit and wondered why I couldn't just have one more.

John Hiatt – Memphis in the Meantime Lyrics 11 years ago
He's tired of Nashville and the country music trappings and wants to go to Memphis to hear blues based music that is a little more edgy and urban. It's always intrigued me that Tennessee has Nashville in the east in the Appalachian foothills and Memphis in the west in the heart of the Mississippi river. That's quite the combination for one little state.

Lady GaGa – Money Honey Lyrics 12 years ago
It seems she alludes to a darker side to this life. As long as she's the favorite mistress, life is a party. I think the golden rule here is to not fall in love because he doesn't want that yet she seems to like his affections best. Seems like things are going to turn out poorly for her.

Cheap Trick – Hello There Lyrics 12 years ago
I'm curious about the line "Would you like to do a number with me?" Is he giving an invite to smoke a joint? In the song Surrender, he says "rolling numbers, rock and roll and got my kiss records out." The definitely makes that point.

Lucinda Williams – Pineola Lyrics 14 years ago
This song is very sad. Suicide is a tough topic and leaves so many friends and family left behind. I had heard somewhere that this is about a guy who was a student of Lucinda's father. I'm surprised that she would write such a personal song. I'm sure it's hard to expose your emotions so barely.
