Anathema – Can't Let Go Lyrics 4 years ago
I really like the contrast between the song's theme of a seemingly endless struggle to let go, and the high energy presented by the fast rhythm. As if to suggest, that those difficult times we face in losing the ones we love can ultimately serve to fuel our inner fires, and ignite us with a new power of passion and determination!

I can't think of many words to accurately articulate how I feel about this song. It's... the most deeply personal and emotionally charged song in my library of experiences. To the artists involved... thank you so much. You really touched my heart.

Her Name Is Calla – Long Grass Lyrics 7 years ago
when you lose someone,
yet you keep trudging onward...
and somehow you know you'll meet again
or at least, they'll remember you after you're gone

or when you're listening,
and you're the person following that broken safe rope
and you hope to find them, no matter how far

Thc – Overfire Lyrics 7 years ago
This song speaks of the longing of the "soul," that thing inside of us which longs to be free, but which we keep chained and bound to this material world; we, slaves to the pleasure... we, trapped and tormented by all that which is flesh, filth, and flame.

Thee More Shallows – Pre-Present Lyrics 8 years ago
In the shower this morning, thinking about this song, I had a sudden thought about relationships; moving out of the past to see the "present" in your lap, and struggling with whether to give your present-self again to someone new. Dealing with insecurity and lingering hopes about one's past relationships and wondering if your "present" is still worthy of giving, or if it is somehow spoiled since it has already been gifted in the past.

We hope that when we open up our present-self to someone else, that what we find will be something magical, and there will be so much of this magical gift that everyone around us will benefit from that radiant, wondrous glory.

Love is something that can so easily be given! Like a penny, you lose virtually nothing by giving it away. But in the act of giving, something magnificent happens. It's not just about this mundane piece of metal anymore; somehow, we create something that is quite wondrous.

This is the true power of love: in giving and sharing love with those around us, we create a very real magic in the world that has the potential to cascade like a life-giving waterfall that everyone can enjoy. Alas... we are weak and foolish, and we often succumb to our insecurities and doubts, and so we take our pennies and spend them on ourselves (even though you likely can't buy anything satisfying with only pennies)... and we hide away our gifts and keep them to ourselves.

This song isn't just about romance... it's about love in its purest, highest form. This is a truly wondrous thing, the stuff that the great poets have written about through all the ages; it is the sort of love which deeply wishes to mature and transform into something magical, the kind of love that we all hunger for ravenously in the deepest levels of our subconscious; but it is elusive, and will only take shape when we learn to open up our present-self without worry or hesitation, to let go of our doubts, and to give with a heart that is free and unburdened... then we become as angels, light as a feather and shining with a radiant light.

Her Name Is Calla – Condor and River Lyrics 9 years ago
It seemed impossible.
But I didn't give up my search, and I found her...

...but the cuts, the darkness that enshrouded her, and I... we were like two shadows on two sides of a broken mirror. Such a mournful song this is; it shall resonate with me deeply, and haunt me, for many years to come.

New Order – Leave Me Alone Lyrics 10 years ago
"Every one of us is an island. If it were not so we should go mad at once. Between these islands are ships, aeroplanes, telephones, wireless— what you will. But they remain islands. Islands that can sink or disappear for ever."
-John Fowles (Conchis in The Magus)

This song is about love, but more than anything it's about the Absurd. It's about our search for meaning in this life, and our struggle to find it. It's like we think we're all stranded on our own little islands and every day we dream that a ship will come and take us away, but we might actually be the islands themselves. Ships may pass by from time to time and we may even catch wind of other islands, but if we face the truth we'll probably be living the rest of our lives stranded here. Even so, there's a sort of comfort in knowing that although we are all alone in some regards, there are thousands of other islands out in this vast ocean.

I'm probably getting these words wrong, but I just smile :-)

Tears for Fears – Mad World Lyrics 13 years ago
Thanks to biba01 for the "hlaajean" correction.

The part of the song containing "'enlargen' your world" had bothered me for a long time --- even though it has clearly been adopted to "enlargen" your world in the Gary Jules cover version, the original Tears for Fears version does NOT sound like Curt is saying "enlargen" at all. Later performances by Tears for Fears seem to skip the reference entirely, raising further suspicion. If you read Curt's lips in this youtube video of a 1982 performance, it's even more apparent that he's saying "hlaajean" and not "enlargen" --- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dBJePxdPX3Y (see 2:00.)

Possibilities I came up with which matched the speech sound more closely, but still didn't seem quite right, were "Herodian world," in reference to Herod The Great (who massacred babies fearing the rise of Jesus) and "Alogian world," in reference to the Alogian sect (a group who rejected Christ as the rational principle that governs the universe.) Both terms were a little bit off from what Curt was saying phonetically, and though either could be interpreted as conveying a "harsh" world that fits the atmosphere of the song, both are subjective religious references.

I think "Hlaajean world" refers to how alien and foreign the world can sometimes feel. People of modern societies can become so easily caught up in themselves that they become isolated and disconnected from the rest of the world. While this still holds today, I think it was especially true in the 80's, when people had more money to spend and seemed driven to express their individuality in exotic ways.

Cult of Luna – Marching To The Heartbeats Lyrics 14 years ago
Alternatively:

Protagonist becomes shackled by a deep and powerful attraction; the object of his attraction reciprocates his feelings, but the resulting bond consists entirely of their own selfish feelings.

The two stumble through life together thinking they're in love when all they truly have is a hollow mockery of love which extends no further than their own egos.

Cult of Luna – Marching To The Heartbeats Lyrics 14 years ago
"The sun, the light in your eyes, trapped me in a cage."
Spoken by the protagonist; attraction steals his heart and shackles him.

"When you saw me you saw yourself."
Spoken by the object of the protagonist's love; the protagonist's feelings are unrequited – they're completely internal to the protagonist and therefore in a sense 'unreal' – the object of his attraction feels nothing similar.

"We were the ones that marched and fell."
Coming from a collective of unfamiliar voices; bound by the delusional love within his mind, the protagonist can only stumble through life. Refusal to release his star-crossed attraction weighs heavily upon his soul. As the scene zooms outward, we realize that our protagonist is not unique; thousands more are somewhere along the highway, all bound by the same ties.
