Bob Dylan – Stuck Inside of Mobile with the Memphis Blues Again Lyrics 12 years ago
I TOTALLY TOTALLY AGREE. I'VE BEEN CHEWING ON THIS ONE SINCE I BOUGHT THE ALBUM IN COLLEGE, IN THE EARLY 1890'S. OK....OK, THE REGULAR '90'S. I JUST HAD TO SAY THAT BECAUSE IT SEEMED LIKE A BOB DYLAN-TYPE RESPONSE TO A QUESTION PUT TO HIM, AT LEAST HOW I IMAGINE HE'D RESPOND. NOTICE I DIDN'T SAY DYLANESQUE. I DON'T THINK DYLAN'S A FAN OF THE TERM, BASED ON WHAT LITTLE HE'S SAID ON SUCH MATTERS. PLUS, BRYAN FERRY OWNS THE TERM NOW: BUT ONLY BECAUSE THE NAMESAKE ALBUM WAS SO WELL MADE. IT'S A DIGRESSION FROM "INTERPRETING" BUT WOULDN'T YOU AGREE THAT ONE'S GOT TO HAVE A PAIR, ESP. IN 2012, TO SIT DOWN, OFT WITH MILLIONS OF DOLLARS OF MONEY THAT AIN'T YOURS (YET), AND TELL THE RECORD COMPANY "I THINK WHAT THE WORLD NEEDS IS AN ENTIRE ALBUM OF ME DOING DYLAN COVERS ! THAT'LL SHOW EVERYONE WITH MY ORIGINALITY !". SO MR. FERRY HAS MY RESPECT AS WELL AS (SONIC) ADMIRATION.

I APOLOGISE. BACK TO REDMIND'S COMMENTS, I CONTINUE TO PROVIDE MASSIVE QUANTITIES OF AGREEMENT. TO ME, THIS SONG SPECIFICALLY IS ONE WRITTEN BY SOMEONE:
1) WITH A STRONG IMAGINATION. I'M NOT A SMART PERSON. I'VE ALWAYS ENJOYED DYLAN UNDER THE UNSAVORY SPECTRE OF KNOWING THAT I'M NOT SHARP ENOUGH TO FULLY APPRECIATE THE SONGS I DO LIKE, AND NOT SHARP ENOUGH TO EVEN UNDERSTAND THE ONES I DON'T. IT'S THAT MUCH BETTER THAN WHAT I CAN SORT OF CONCEIVE TO ENJOY.
2) WHO'S ALSO A LITTLE STONED !

GIVEN WHAT I JUST SAID ABOUT NOT BEING GOOD ENOUGH TO GET HIS WORKS, I THINK I CAN SORT OF FERRET OUT THE LINES, HENCE THOUGHTS THAT WERE PROBABLY INFLUENCED WITH A LITTLE "RANDOM ENERGY", TO USE THE WORLD'S MOST GENEROUS EUPHENISM. THAT COULD BE BOB DYLAN SMOKING, IN THE WORDS OF PAUL MCCARTNEY, ANY # OF "HERBAL JAZZ CIGARETTES" - I STILL LOVE THAT ONE, OR IT COULD BE JOHN CAGE ROLLING DICE*. THE POINT IS, THE WORDS IN THIS SONG ARE PROBABLY THE ONES THAT MAKE THE LEAST SENSE OF ANY I KNOW - AND I AM VERY FAR FROM A DYLAN SAVANT. I THINK "HE JUST SMOKED MY EYELIDS, AND PUNCHED MY CIGARETTE" COULD ONLY BE CONCEIVED WITH A LITTLE HELP FROM SOMETHING, BE IT A DIE OR A JAZZ CIGARETTE. BUT AGAIN, THIS IS FROM SOMEONE TOO STUPID TO UNDERSTAND ANYWAY.

PLEASE ACCEPT MY APOLOGY: THE ALL CAPS FONT IS NOT BY ANY MEANS MY CHOICE.

SMOKED EYELIDS, PUNCHED CIGARETTES - SHELLEY, NOPE; YEATS, I THINK NOT; BYRON, NO - WELL - MAYBE IF HE WAS HI- WAIT, NO; TOLSTOY, NYET; RIMBAUD, C'EST POSSIBLE - MAIS....NON, NON, JE M'EXCUSE [M. RIMBAUD BEGS APOLOGY AS HE WAS IN FACT PARTAKING OF A PARISIAN HERBAL JAZZ CIGARETTE @ THE TIME).

THANKS FOR NOT DELETING THIS INSTANTLY. I NEED TO GO SMOKE AN EYELID.

R.E.M. – Binky The Doormat Lyrics 14 years ago
As a longtime fan of the band and its music, I feel qualified to say that nothing about them is obvious, ESPECIALLY lyrically; that's the point, or so we're told. However, along comes this terrifying and terrifyingly good song in the mid-90's, and, for the first time ever, the song seemed...obvious. Not that I'm right.
What motivated me to contribute this is that the above comments, though insightful, don't really mention that the song concerns itself with raping someone, or at least seemingly doing so. To me, the giveaway is the line "Shut the door, open wide; Seconal, Astroglide". Not to sound remedial, but just in case, Astroglide is a "personal lubricant" that's been out for a long time (Stipe must have liked the bizarre, 50's, space-race era name) and Seconal is a barbiturate sedative from roughly the same era. To me, its mention conjures up images of Marylin Monroe lying dead with a bottle of them scattered about. I think that's what the writer was going for - an older, out West/Hollywood way of knocking someone out. If anyone cares, I believe that the original drug were red capsules, which is the origin of the term "reds" for barb's. The drug was famous, infamous, for its side effects probably more than its effects - all barbs are VERY dangerous in O/D, esp with alcohol. In fact, that's why drugs like Valium were invented - as a depressant that was non-lethal in typical O/D fashion. It was responsible for the above actor's death, and I'm sure a few more too. I'm not an expert in these matters.
So, make what you will of the rest of the lyrics (I'm sure you don't want to hear my opinion, but I think I've got it figured out) but the above line is a graphic, unpleasant description of keeping someone in bathroom, knocking them out, possibly killing them (see above) and then using the AstroGlide on them. It's an ugly line, but effective in its way.
I'm still in shock that so socially concious a band with a record of such that's spotless would let such an evil scenario be released under their name. Then again, they're always pushing the line, moving fwd ea. album, so I'm not really that shocked, either.
Sorry this took so long. I need a Seconal...
