Mallory used to make padlocks, and thats what I always interpreted this as, a secure, hard to break heart, when it fails, breaks or is unlocked, he becomes human and doing so exhibits the emotional torment of that trauma "I could CRAWL around the floor..." |

This is an early song about youth at a party/disco (boys and girls collide). Its 11 o'clock, and the night is coming to an end, the sad songs, the slow songs that end a traditional disco are on. He wants to get together with a girl, A painted face (a girl with too much make up) we havent got much time... call out your name, possible further liaison... |

| U2 – The Electric Co. Lyrics

Electric Co. stands for Elecectric Compulsive Therapy. A "therapy" that was still being "practised" with mental institutions at the time of the writing of the song. The band wanted to highlight light the fact "If you dont know, Electric Co."
Although I must admit the song is called THE Electric Co, but in the song the "the" is dropped.

Iam no Latin scholar, but I have been told that the latin in the song is awkward and almost "pidgeon" but I think that adds to what the song means to me.
A simple man in love with his religion and finds that you dont need to know all the proper words to express your love of God.
He wants to be alongside God 'inside' the church, but is embarrassed he doesnt know the right words "I try, I try to speak up". He doesnt know high latin of the priests (I try to sing this song) so recites what he has heard/remembered but hence the Latin phrases are apparently not sentences, just 'one-liners'. He is frustrated by this "loosen my lips" but it doesn't matter because "the door is open" and he realises that you can express your love of God however you want, when he realises this he is willing to "give it to you(God)"
Well, thats how I see it

Again a simple love song to his wife, Ali, that can be interpreted and applied all over the place. When I first heard it, it was a bitter cold winter and I was thinking of joining the Army, naturally it became the East/West German divide. The Solidarity thing, was a temporal coincidence, the song was written before the date of lifting marshal law. |

I think this song has been interpreted into many situations, because its a simple love song, Bono and his wife. But I have heard; NI and Eire, East and West Germany unification and U2 and the audience. Its a versatile glove. |

Its about watching your world for one day, as if you had died. How was I remembered? When we are young we think the world revolves around us and that if we were to die we would be remembered as much as we thought we would be, but in reality we probably wouldn't be, hence the "landslide in my ego". The Ian Curtis suicide is temporal coincidence. |

| U2 – A Sort Of Homecoming Lyrics

Although I see the disaster/war/famine ideas, I think its a bit more mundane:
During the 80:s U2 was a lot on the road and a consequence of that, everytime the came to a new city, it was a sort of coming home. Hence the song.

I love the Boy album, still one of my favourites, but I was told this was a song about a boy who had been "interfered with" and that he cant make heads or tails of life and he just wants to be walking the streets. Sorry to controversial. |
