Rise Against – Dancing for Rain Lyrics 16 years ago
Ok kids, here we go: this song is not about a relationship. I'm not sure how you do it, but every song on this forum has at least one person who has translated the lyrics into their personal high school crush/emo/whatever thing, hence the posts stating "I think it's about a girl." Just stop, really.

This song is not about the nonexistence of God. It doesn't fit Rise Against's lyrical agenda.

We all know that Rise Against is from Chicago, right? Right. This song is about The Great Chicago Fire, which happened in the late 19th century.

There was a drought before the fire, and no one really knows how it started, which explains the chorus. (Worlds colliding is a reference to the mayor of Chicago having to ask for help from surrounding communities, which would have been quite a culture shock for people from the small towns surrounding the big city.) The fire covered roughly 2000 acres, destroying Chicago's water system, thus rendering the city's fire department unable to do anything. This explains 'the water's gone, but the fire still rages'; and also 'the me shrugged their shoulders and left'.

The time frame of the fire was during the industrial revolution, which explains the reference to sleeping upstairs, as living conditions were cramped into high rise apartment buildings.

The fire burned itself out when rain began to fall, three days after it started.

The line about swallowing your lies is most likely about the first suspect/scapegoat, Catherine O'Leary: a woman, and catholic (who weren't very popular at the time). Being that women had very few rights at the time, there would have been no social consequences for framing her for the fire.

The rest is just artistic filler meant to convey the trauma and panic that something like this would cause.

Bush – Cold Contagious Lyrics 16 years ago
This song is about the human reflection of religion. These lyrics are more literal than one would think from a grunge band, I think.

"Wherever you are, you will carry always
Truth of the scars and darkness of your faith"

Your life is a reflection of your religious dogma. (I.E. eye for an eye, condemnation of others who don't share your beliefs, etc.)

"Slowly move on, how did we get to here
It all went wrong, gravity claiming all your tears
Everything looks so much better now, so much better now"

As faith evolves, slowly but surely corruption takes over, thus, the suffering and tears of others. However, if you keep your eyes on God, and your faith, it can only get better by way of heaven.

"You will get yours, you will get yours, you will get yours
You have no right to ask me now, you were never that around
I have missed"

Eventually, the self righteous and corrupt will get their due. They have no right to question your morals or way of life, because those in religious power worship a God who isn't really around, except in vague ideas of perfection, which cannot be acheived.

*the argument of a perfect being is not one that can be won. If said being is truly perfect, then it must exist, because not existing would be seen as a flaw. It's the ultimate catch 22 of all arguments.*

"Reality daytrips and your suit me, suit me ways"

Total faith is akin to a complete hallucination of life. Those in power have written the rules set forth in order to suit their needs, and keep their power. (The 10% tithe to the church is a perfect example. If god is immaterial, what does he need with money? Certainly his word will be spread without the human invention of currency. Also, the commandment stating Honor thy father and mother can be translated to honor those who came before you, because they know best and will teach you. One should make his or her own decisions, and honor should be earned, not blindly given.)

"Turn out the light switch, we've been awake for days
And no-one's coming round here no more, no-one's coming round here"

If you stay awake for long enough, you'll begin to hallucinate. Sleep away this daydream, and no one will come around anymore, because people will eventually gain enough sense to think for themselves.

"Cold contagious, all the might mighty men
What you save is what you lose out in the end
Cold contagious, cold contagious"

All the mighty, mighty men are spreading their dogma like a disease. The "soul" that you save in the end won't be worth all the lives ruined by the perversion of faith that comes in the form of war in the name of god, among other things.

"Paint your perfect day, I don't mind this
I'm better off by the way, deeply grounded"

Tell me more about heaven, I don't mind it. But by the way, I'm better off grounded in reality, making my own choices, living for myself and the things in the real world that matter, as opposed to the fairytale happy ending.
