I think that the bad dream fucker is the persona of the voice in his mind, and Christian Brothers is the brand name of alcohol that is going to drown out the bad dream. Drugs and alcohol knock down the bad thoughts. |

| Elliott Smith – Bled White Lyrics

A songwriter is kind of a beat reporter who goes out and writes about what he sees and feels. The reporter in this song is bummed out because there's nothing new out there to report. I think "bled white" means that all of the stories have been milked by other reporters. The city is like a corpse. It's all been written before. Ironically, this is a juicy and amazing song about not having anything to write unless he gets high. His messed up friend delivers the goods. He may end up going over the edge like his friend, but not for a while. |

| Bob Dylan – Dark Eyes Lyrics

I think that the guy in the song is a soldier. Everyone around is involved in some political upheaval, some revolution or other, but the look in a woman's eyes is all that matters. When the world has gone to hell and selling death, he's buying life. What else is there but dark eyes? |

Some exec from the music biz is always telling the singer he can make him rich, a star. The exec thinks it's about musical skill, but the singer knows it's a crap shoot. Despite his misgivings, the singer buys into it and moves to L.A. to play the game. The exec wines and dines him, showing there is money to be made in this biz (he's throwing it around, after all). Go for it, the singer tells himself. But he also says he he's over it, and he gave up the dream, so don't start buying into it now. After all, most artists lose the game and fail. Very few make it. Despite that risk, part of him is glad to be in L.A., playing the game. The singer is seduced. He makes his pledge to his new city, his new life. He makes a deal with the devil. |

| Elliott Smith – A Fond Farewell Lyrics

I think that the friend is the rock and roll persona. It's everything that comes with the artist lifestyle–the girls, the drugs, whatever. Elliott knew that he couldn't handle it, so he was stepping out, at least in his mind. That guy was dead to him. |

| Nick Drake – Pink Moon Lyrics

I think "Pink Moon" symbolizes the feminine shift in the universe of the 60s. It was the gentle, pacifist phase of the times. No one could stop it. Pink moon gonna' get you all. This is a movement song, I think, like "The Times They Are A Changin.'" |

| The Beatles – Savoy Truffle Lyrics

I completely agree that this is a jab at Paul. It is disguised, of course, since Paul and George were bandmates, but these guys were at odds in a big way. George talked about how he resented "Oh Blah Di Blah Da" making the album ahead of his songs. Can you blame him? Paul's song persona was very sweet, but he was not always the same guy in real life, it seems. George was calling him out. |
