This is a very clever song that creates a scenario that leaves us free to imagine a number of possible scenarios. One scenario I can think of is that he has multiple personalities. That's why the townspeople say he's "not right" - displaying different moodswings. Maybe he bullied the other kids when he lost his temper, and showed other kinds of disturbing behaviour - hurting animals and breaking his own toys. Then along comes Mary - she comes to know the "man inside" - his good personality. They dream of running away together, to be free from the rest of the town's prejudices. But his darker side becomes jealous of her loving his good side. One night by the river, he leaves her and heads home, but his cruel poersonality takes over and runds back and kills Mary. The next morning, he has no memory of killing her. When he says "I swear I left her" it sounds to me as if he's strugglinbg to remember what happened, but he's very confused - could his personalities be struggling? When he thinks back on his life - how its done him wrong (meaning his multiple personalities causing him to get in trouble) and when all of his rescues are gone (his mother and girlfriend are no longer around to defend him) At the end, he still says he needs to make it to the river, to escape from the townspeople taking their revenge against him. Of course, this is just one interpretation... |

I wish people would stop trying to categorise artists like this. A pop singer can do a dark, heavy song and a rock band can do a mellow, slow song. To me, it sounds like she changed herself to satisfy this boy she really admired. Then at some point it fell apart - maybe he abused her, maybe he cheated on her, we don't know for sure. But at some point she's had a revelation - that she's the one who was giving everything to be with him, and he obviously did not hold her in the same regard. She "blames herself" for hating him, because she was blinded by love, letting him get away with however he was treating her. But she's holding on to her dignity - she won't let him see how he's devastated her. |

You LOOK LIKE the avalanche I need, not you are the one I need. You can't be sturdy as a rock all the time, sometimes you just have to take a chance and expose yourself to let someone into your life. There's a kind of uncertainty in the final note of this song, leaving it open for us to wonder whether the situation turns out good or bad. | |

| South was not my favourite album (and I don't think it was Heather's favourite either, as she went independant afterwards) but these lyrics are great. Living in my own sweet time... That's exactly how I feel when I'm at a party or something and everyone's standing around chatting about their "amazing" lives... Good for them, of course, but I'm not here to play one-up games with people. I'm quite happy with my life the way it is, and I'm not in a rush to catch up to anybody. | |

Actually, this song reminds me of the Orpheus and Eurydice myth - he follows her down to the underworld to bring her soul back. Only in this instance, she does not want her lover to sink into the darkness that she's in. She'll feel guilty for plunging her lover into the darkness, but if the lover is not strong enough to resist then she won't have the strength to resist either. Kind of a reverse Wuthering Heights situation - she doesn't want her lover to cut their life short and join her in death, but she'll embrace them if they do. |

Well I actually thought this song was about an affair. Here's my interpretation: The man is married, but the relationship with his wife has gone cold. And he is having an affiar with a mistress - an admirer who is in love with this man, even though he is married. The song is from the mistress' perspective. The dragon represents the destructive force in the man's life - his guilt/corruption/pride/greed, whatever. He feels devastated, like his world has been reduced to chaos. "Don't tell me a woman did this to you" - it was his own fault he got his life into this mess. "Candy lies" - he's blaming his wife for his trouble or his mistress for all the confusion, just to make himself feel better. But the mistress endeavours to comfort him. She can't solve his problems, but she just wants to tame the raging beast inside him and bring him to a state of calm. "The gods they have slipped up - they forgot about the power of a woman's love" I believe she's saying that even though this affair may be morally wrong, there is always some good in any act of love. As the Santa character, Tori explores love even in its darker forms. At the end, she says "Forgive me..." I think this is because the mistress also feels guilty for her actions - for further confusing the man's family life by not resisiting him, or leading him on. But she stands by her decision to give love to a man during his hardships. |

This is a song I heard loads of times when i was younger, but i've just recently started listening to it again. Beautiful lyrics. I assume he used the name Cinderella because of the one headlight/one shoe missing thing. Normally the name of a fairy tale princess would make us think of a happy ending, but in this case it gives us the image of a tragic figure with no happy ending. Forget sappy love songs - these lyrics really make me feel this man's love for the girl. |
