The Cure – Out of This World Lyrics 14 years ago
I remember when this album came out. It was supposed to be the Cure's swan song... their last album before breaking up cause Robert had had enough at the time and needed a long-awaited break. Of course, we know this not to be true, they went right back at it with the success of the album & tour, but i digress.. so "one last time before it's over, one last time before the end" and the lyrics to Maybe Someday recall the notion of looking back at the past and not knowing what the future is bringing. Exactly what deathcab commented about 4/11/04.

Toad the Wet Sprocket – Good Intentions Lyrics 16 years ago
eIts hard for ALL of us to rely on our good intentions. And you're anything like me, then you definately have things in your head that you can't mention either. Thank you Toad for such a wonderful decription of the complexities of human nature (again).

Toad the Wet Sprocket – All I Want Lyrics 16 years ago
an upbeat song brilliantly written to reflect the author's point of view wishing he could feel the same way his raped and pregnant girlfriend did.

Toad the Wet Sprocket – Pray Your Gods Lyrics 16 years ago
Time out on the biblical references. Although a lot of Glen's songs are spiritual of sort, this may not be. "I will give you the secrets that you request and you will be the one to sacrifice" is directed potentially towards his girlfriend/wife that is struggling with the decision of abortion. "Lay your olive arms across my breast... pray (to) your gods that ask for your blood." Her gods being the influences in her life swaying her decision of abortion rather than life. A pro-choice vs. pro-life song but through he author's point-of-view, a choice that is not made by him, only her. Does anyone agree or disagree?

Toad the Wet Sprocket – Nanci Lyrics 16 years ago
Is it possible that the lyrics themselves are a conversation?
Follow me here...

"I can't believe you, you bend your words like Uri Geller's spoons" - 1st person, and a derogatory comment at that since Uri Geller, although entertaining was lost from collective popular conscienous after being 'disproven' by various skeptics

"(It's) Not quite safe here, (and) every judgment seems to smack of doom" - 2nd person - the reference to Geller being a severe judgment and dooming to whatever matter is presented between the two characters

"Are you ok?" - 1st person - asked after judgment passed, we've all felt that, the 'trying to go back and correct my mistake by being nice way of talking to your loved one' feeling...

"I'm just fine" -2nd person - curtly and deservedly.

"You take Nanci, for me Loretta is fine" (referring to Nanci Griffith's songs of despair and longing, and Loretta Lynn's struggle but sunshine songs, and between these two characters, 1st person is saying you take the long road pal to the 2nd person. be as sad as you want to) - 1st person,

but at the end of the song, the context switches so that the 1st person feeling guilty chooses to let the 2nd person being wronged, in more than one ways now, choose the lighter path of Loretta Lynn rather than the darker Nanci Griffiths to wright the wrongs as the 1st person, the author, is comforted in the self-inflicted punishment that most humans can relate to.

Toad the Wet Sprocket – Crazy Life Lyrics 16 years ago
The song obviously seems to speak to those (govt't agencies) initiating and continuing the imprisonment of Leonard Peltier for his involvement in the 1975 Pine Ridge Shootout. Amnesty Int'l supports the contention that the entire processings regarding his imprisonment and 2 consecutive life sentences were tainted from the get go and as a result it's not fair that "he's in there and you're on the outside." His convictors (The Govt) are more guilty that he (Peltier) is.

Have you ever heard a more anti-government song that is as soothing as this?

Toad the Wet Sprocket – Before You Were Born Lyrics 16 years ago
Back in college (93-95) it was offered up by a friend that most of the entire FEAR album was the collective experience of Glen Phillips' girlfriend being raped, becoming pregnant and the resulting choices that ultimately destroyed the relationship. I'd like to have some confirmation of that if possible. It would explain a lot of songs...
