Between 'Got That Feeling', 'Paths of Glory', and then this song all being back-to-back-to-back near the end of the album, it seems pretty evident that the band was bored, struggling creatively, and probably threw these bland songs together and decided to say "fuck it." It shows in Mike's lyrics and un-inspired singing on all 3. |

Chino has stated in numerous interviews that this song is about the temptations of drugs. Listen to the fucking lyrics. Nearly everything on SNW is about drug use. |

I've always associated this song with the Manifest Destiny - the westward movement of the White man, and specifically the building of the American railway in the 1860's. The riff and keyboards at the beginning of the song sound like a steam locomotive gaining momentum.
The lyrics also correlate to the building of the railway - "drought makes the workers deam, muscles and fields of green" - it's easier to knock soil loose to lay the rail and ties with dry land, but they hope for the rains to come so that they can cool off and take a break. I think the 2nd verse is talking about things from the Native American's point of view, as they were constantly being 'squashed' into smaller and smaller confines as the railroad expanded. |

8-ball is an 1/8th of an ounce of cocaine, fool. In the song's usage, he's talking about a real 8-ball, like as in playing pool at a bar. You're just supposed to put 2 and 2 together for the double entendre, as it's being used to describe a coke dealer as well. |

This song is not a metaphor. He is singing about a child and its constant need for attention, and how the baby seems to be neglected. It's really quite sad. |
