The Black Eyed Peas – I Gotta Feeling Lyrics

I feel like slitting my wrists every time I hear this pile of autotuned crap. They play it on my muzak at work and I want to KILL AND KILL AGAIN.
I nominate it as the anthem of the Special Olympics. |

X – Back 2 the Base Lyrics

Just a song about the fun psychos you meet while riding public transportation in LA. Since everybody who can own a car does, riding a bus in LA is like something out of Jacob's Ladder. |

T. Rex – Ride A White Swan Lyrics

I've always interpreted this as gentle teasing of the hippies who were playing around with Druidism/Wiccan etc. in the late 60s and early 70s. You get the feeling Marc thought they were harmless kooks and their activities were of no consequence ("you can't go wrong", "there you go", "you'll know all you'll know"). |

Dead Kennedys – California Über Alles Lyrics

And all of a sudden this song is relevant again! =)
Brown's sort of an unlikely fascist, but bear in mind that the DKs were getting into all kinds of legal trouble over the supposed "obscenity" of their songs and album covers, and as governor they blamed Brown for creating that kind of atmosphere.
"Suede/denim secret police". LOL |

Squeeze – Take Me, I'm Yours Lyrics

There's an error. "To seek the helpless future" should be "to seek the helpless CREATURE". Hunting with eagles as a metaphor for seduction.
Uh, and I don't really think this song is about "finding God". It's about finding 'tang. LOL |

The White Stripes – Girl, You Have No Faith in Medicine Lyrics

Heh, my wife's not supposed to take anything but Tylenol because of a history of stomach ulcers, but she swears Tylenol is totally useless for her headaches. Since women are much more prone to migraines than men I think there may actually be a physical reason for this (Tylenol has a different mechanism than NSAIDs like aspirin and naproxen sodium), and it isn't just women being "difficult". |

Beastie Boys – So What'cha Want? Lyrics

Just a freestyle rap, no real deep "meaning" so here's some explanation of the references:
-Eddie Harris: jazz musician, introduced the electric tenor sax ("plug me in")
-Spoonie Gee: one of the first rap artists on vinyl ('79)
-Dr. Spock: child psychologist and author
-Victor the Cleaner: Jean Reno's character from La Femme Nikita
-Gardena: a city in the "South Bay" of Los Angeles |

The Small Faces – The Universal Lyrics

According to Steve Marriott, who wrote it and performed most of it in his backyard: "It's about getting up in the morning and going outside and saying hello to the Universe". I've always found it charming, especially Steve's dog barking in the background. |

Elton John – Levon Lyrics

I think thequeenofscots is closest to the right interpretation, especially when you consider the early 70s timeframe of the song. The parents of the teenagers and twenty-somethings of that time had fought in WWII, were very traditional, and conservative. They had expectations for their kids that were not being fulfilled, since there was a rise in (non traditional) spiritualism and a backlash against materialism. *Their* parents, in turn, were the Depression generation ("pauper to a pawn") which had instilled this materialism in the first place, viewing human advancement solely through a materialist lens.
The song is about this generational conflict. The religious overtones are secondary, I think. Most parents worship their kids, at least until they become teenagers LOL. |

The Band – I Shall Be Released Lyrics

I agree with clovus, it's a metaphor. The "prison" is loneliness and isolation.
The song was written by Dylan, btw. The version on "The Last Waltz" is just epic. |

This song has a wonderful, odd feeling combining loneliness and peace. Reminds me of a long walk to nowhere in particular. |

Lady GaGa – Poker Face Lyrics

This song is about a talentless ho milking her idiot fans out of money. But you can't read her P-P-P-POKER FACE LOL. The only good thing about this song was Christopher Walken reading it like a poem on some British show. |

David Gray – Babylon Lyrics

Jeez, all of these comments and nobody's mentioned the Tower of Babel? Which happened to be located in BABYLON? And represents the "confusion of tongues"? Y'all need to read more. :) Anyway, that's what Babylon represents in the song: the misery caused by miscommunication and the inability of men and women to communicate using terms they can agree on. "Let go your heart Let go your head And feel it now" is about learning to communicate on a non verbal level. |

The Clash – Spanish Bombs Lyrics
|
The song links the '39 Civil War to the (then-current) Basque separatist bombings as well as the IRA. The DC-10 didn't start flying until 1970 and I don't really think there were any discos in '39 Spain, so it's not correct to say the song is exclusively about the '30s. The liner notes from the Clash box set quote Strummer making this link explicitly. |

Don Henley – The End of the Innocence Lyrics

Yes, a lot of the lyrics do refer to Reagan, but the other big theme of this song is DIVORCE. "Happily ever after fails, and we've been poisoned by these fairy tales"..."the lawyers dwell on small details". The song is told from the perspective of someone who's not only disillusioned by the political environment but is wondering if his relationship can work when his parents' didn't. As someone who graduated from high school in '86 in the midst of my parent's divorce (and who saw my friends' parents divorce at about a 90% rate) this song has always resonated with me. |

The Flaming Lips – Do You Realize?? Lyrics

Yeah, that's my thought too. Not believing in an afterlife is more than most people can handle, but once you push past that terror you might be able to live your life the way you're meant to, with an open heart and without pettiness or selfishness. |

Beck – Farewell Ride Lyrics
|
While it's legitimate to see drug allusions in this song, the most obvious interpretation is that the singer is ALREADY dead, he's not someone who wants to die, etc. All he needs is the horses to take him to the graveyard (the original hearses were horse-drawn carriages), he doesn't see or need anything else.
