Bono said in an interview people don’t get how anti war this song is, he was sort of frustrated about it. It’s as though it almost did too good of a job padding the message down - though it’s right out there and obvious (I must admit as a child it only vaguely conjured up such thoughts though). Basically this song is about American Bombers dropping bombs on innocent civilians to mold politics for monied interests and those civilians having no place to escape to throughout the mickey mouse Americanized world now...except back into the ‘arms’... of America. Just my interpretation? let's look at the lyrics, but before doing so: It is interesting to note the London ‘911’ bombing happened right on the day when Bono was to have his first really formal full length sit down with the UK Prime Minister and it was cancelled. As Zach De La Rocha of Rage Against the Machine and Thom Yorke of Radiohead have both said of Bono: 'he’s a little too close to the fire.' Zach thinks he may have become too much like them but Thom just says ‘Bono’s doing the same thing I am — the only difference is he’s on the inside, I couldn’t do what he does cause I would just smash them in the face.’ Alright so this is how I understand this song: In the howling wind Comes the stinging/a stinking rain See you driving nails Into the souls on the tree of pain [U2 shows Crosses on fire in concert specifically during this part of this song in their older tours. It’s as if to show America’s hypocrisy to Americans without preaching to them. It’s a hypocrisy as far as when it comes to Christ’s anti-violence teachings and us pretending to be Christian following his way (truly we are pre-christian and few deserve the right to be called ‘Christian’ because of their lack of self control especially in relation to inner violence and how it manifests). And the crosses burning also perhaps symbolizes the killing of innocent ones just as Christ was innocent and killed. ‘The souls’ are the running women and children he mentions later — that which you do unto the least of them you do unto me... but as a militarist recently told me concerning civilian casualties and people who get in the way even if they are innocent: “you have to crack a few eggs to make an omelet.” So you decide/deicide who’s right... ] From the fire fly: a red-orange glow [these are the fighter planes he mentions later shooting phosphoric etc.] See the prince of fear running scared in the valley below [these seem to be all the idiot troops killing for monied interests instead of killing those very monied interests themselves: army troops running, working below, below consciousness, under the influence of the Prince of Fear, ‘the Prince of the Air’ and of ‘this earth’ he is called in the Bible...(ie: ‘Satan’)...they are working, running in conjunction with the fighter planes, running scared in the valley below, little kids enrolled in the army who don’t know what they’re doing?] Bullet the blue sky, bullet the blue sky, bullet the blue, bullet the blue [obviously fighter planes] In the locust wind [locusts are a symbol in the Torah/Old Testament/’Book of Prophets’ for people who are mindless in their getting involved in wars, swarming over lands devouring...in this case the air or ‘winds’ ‘the locust wind’] Comes a rattle and hum [Military land and air Units] Jacob wrestled the angel and the angel was overcome He had a demon seed who leaves a flower of fire [I detest not being clear but I’m not going to in this case because this is a deep topic reserved only for a much lengthier discussion. But if it is this,this is what the spraying Napalm and Phosphorous looks like afterward that America uses] POUNDING THE WOMEN AND CHILDREN Who run...into the Arms...of America [the irony: they flee into the arms...of their adversary...for ‘safety’ from the so called ‘terrorists’ who are usually created by exactly such collateral damage (or by American Intel itself to provide excuse for controlling other countries money lines). It's like a knife piercing through me whenever he says 'The pain won't go away, I am growing..in peculiar ways'...such a lovely song and it reminds me of someone I just met who feels the same. [btw, one of the times at the end he switches and says: 'I'm going to be the light.' And when I listen close I think he says, 'no time for sad dement' which is basically the same meaning as sad lament but he can make it sound like 'no time for sentiment' also which adds a different layer to it.] |

a few people were right here, this song is a big fuck you to breeders...unequivocal and merciless. I don't see how you couldn't get this when they were going to call the name of their album 'sheep' before it was called nevermind. Half the songs on Nevermind (Lithium, Teen Spirit) are mocking them. It's weird, he sings it in a way so it both sounds like 1. he is explaining how he will get on with life in such a way and yet not be one of them, a sort of how-to; and 2. speaking from their voice, like a half-witted idiot in a way that sounds like he is totally mocking every aspect of their stupid fucking lives and how they talk about things. That's why I say it is unequivocal, it surrounds it from all sides like one big emotion, relentless. It was called 'immodium' before I like to think cause it's about how breeders just shit out kids like diarrhea, not just in reference to his friends use of this. Also in an early footage of this on youtube he calls the song pedo-necropheliawhacked or something (you can check it out) and this further confirms what I'm saying this song is about. I'll show both ways of how I think it can be interpreted like this from among Kurt's famed 'polymorphous repeating words' he always likes to pull the trick out and do in almost every one of his songs. All of this is based on hours of live footage from different concerts I've been watching...or rather, listening to, with this song. Breed (I like to call it:Descend or Descent of the Species), The first way: I don't care X4, care, care if it's old ['care bout the song' he later changed it to] I don't mind, I'm a line, I don't rhyme, out of line, I'm a mime...mined [yeah I've heard him mix all of this in in the concerts, he's a clever friggin pixie : ) ] don't have a mind I get away X4, way away from your home/hole I'm afraid, I'm afraid, I'm afraid, I'm a fray, frail Ghost [maybe he's crying out to Tobi Vail: 'grrl' as a reference to a word she popularized and that a lot of his songs on this album are said (by more then one source) to be addressing...it was a girl who broke up with him bad then]: if you have even if you need [one version sounds like: God, if you're here, I'm kneeling on my knees and at the end it sounds like he's invoking 'the son (of) Je-sse, to descend, cause the dead are dead.' And yeah, I'm not closed to this 'building a tree' being related to Kabballah. He was definitely looking into that kind of stuff. And while we're on this subject, even though Courtney Love didn't like Gurdjieff she learned some things from his people, unlike most people who have no clue who he is, so she could have got Kurt into thinking about that stuff like how there are only 3 centers in man: physical, emotional and mental. And then he adds it into his lyrics saying: 'we can have all 3 descend, set, dying, dying, dead'] I don't mean to stare/steer, we don't have to breed we can get a house, we can build a dream, [sometimes he says 'plant a house, build a tree'] I don't even care, we can have our dreams descend, dissent, the dead, descend, descent...dying, dying, dying.. In my opinion, in most the versions it sounds like he's trying to ellicit a confession out of these breeders that this is the only horse shit they want out of life cause they never want to come out and just admit that they do, so he says: 'Just say it, say it, say it.' It's like how Robert Plant changed his song in a concert I saw recently so that it ends with him harshly screaming out over and over: 'does it hurt to hear them lying...WAS THIS THE ONLY WORLD YOU HAD, WAS THIS THE ONLY WORLD YOU HAD, WAS THIS THE ONLY WORLD YOU HAD.' Unlike in the days of the Troubadour there are only a few songs in our generation about the kind of really great things Magie Mcgill looks like it may be talking about. The music is horse shit and I always change it even though the Doors are one of my few favourites but the lyrics are 'out of this world man, dig? so get it on...' ..that's why I choose this as one of a few Doors songs to comment about. It seems to me to be about Hagia Sophia (the astral realm of wisdom): a Woman gettin herself incarnated and entangled down here in tangent town after an ideal in-dei-an summer. Do you dig it my soul brothers of the crystal ship, are we gettin down into the gravy? It comes down like we at birth and - on another level collectively: here to earth - like in times before when we fell from the crystal ship into the materia. And she, like us, is in her soul kitchen as amnesiacs in the materia. So far it goes according to the gnostics. And this Tangent town...well, we are in a low down mishap sort of earth far from 'Dad' God, who left in the will (ie. Also I've noticed recently at the beginning I think he may be saying: 'emotional'..'reject.' Elliott clearly says in interviews that his reference to drugs in his lyrics are just metaphors for attachment to deeper desires and don't necessarily literally mean drug use even if it's ok if people want to take it that way. I have reason to believe (see my other posts on his lyrics) that he was aware of the rhythms of 'things that change invisibly' in a way drugs can shortcut you past religion to seeing and experiencing. But I think he was able to be in such a place somewhat without them even if they were aids for this course - yeah I think he was a saint coming from and going to another place...and because his candle burned so bright he almost forgot it was twilight, 'there is no nightime here...it's only a passing phase.' So centrally I think what he is talking about here in this twisted lullaby is that If we wake up then we no longer need to go through dark reoccurrence here but this will be our last life we have to repeat here, and then we can leave, it will be the last little one. Little one also means 'initiate' in esoteric traditions behind religions. He is contently (?) singing this is his last life as it is for those who learn how to constantly be in a state of De Ja Vue. When you were around him he almost awoke this in you. notice there is a higher voice singing along in the background all the same words on this song with him if you listen close, a second voice....Buddha taught our re-incarnating lives are not different peoples in different times but variations of our own life here we are living over and over lost in like 'the butterfly effect' or 'ground hog day' based on different decisions and are like pearls on a thread, the thread being our true self that keeps falling asleep into these different pearls until it learns to be independent of the sleep of them. It shows how organic and evolutionary (and, yes, sometimes more esoteric) his songs were then is commonly assumed. If you think I'm imagining then just listen to his enunciations on the live cd that confirm what I'm putting here and that forms a self-referential set of lyrics that makes sense only if such enunciations are there. The key to understanding Elliott's songs lies in remembering he said his songs are at their best when it as though one part of himself is singing to another part of himself and you are let in. And the other key is what his best friend said: that he was constantly reading esoteric, metaphysical literature when he was with him on tours and so it is good to consider this is probably his perspective. In my estimation Elliott's primary gift to our earth is revealing an inner emotional 'god' in him that is buried in all of us and this song seems to be doing that. The meaning of this song will not be very convincing until you see my explanation of his lyrics for 'Kings Crossing' and 'Coast to Coast' in conjunction with this. I don't deny that this song has some relation to the failure of drug induced experience but then so can spiritual experiences with those 'crippling true aids.' I am reminded of the lead singer of Depeche Mode's explanation of why he was hooked on Heroin: 'it's better then love what you feel, disconnected from everything, hovering over your quivering body and outside of it.' Our Spirit may be in secret pain all the time cause it is hardly ever awake in it's own identity caught down here in the body that is inside it, the bad soma... (living is more painful then death to those with a spirit, like Jim Morrison who said this. And this flesh is weak but the Spirit is willing (willing if one is artificially induced by drugs out of every-day sleep/consensual reality in order to then remember to be willing to conquer sense existence, or, much preferably: self initiating oneself to overcome ordinary sense existence). Almost all ancient cultures religions teach the Spirit is somewhat antagonistic to the physical world, almost like good in relation to evil, when it manifests. And this creates the friction that can develop a semi-eternal soul vessel/ship crystallized for the next life that is in between but it is hard to get right. That's what I think this song is about. Usually it's just one explosion in the lab after another and you end up a repetitive safe lunatic or a whacked out irresponsible tramp by life's end. In any case...he begins each verse with his spirit narrating about his lower self here (his physical bodily existence here). And then he switches and sings with his soul the chorus that shows this physical existence of his here is just a sort of temporal shadow of a shadow of the Spirit, a fond farewell to this Friend (The Spirit being: 'the Friend' as Sufi's call the Spirit, or 'The Host'). five brights that are black and white/(it sounds though like he says 'love buds that are blackened wax') [the five centers in man: thinking, feeling, physical, 'higher brain,' as he calls this one later on in the song by name, and higher emotional or 'emotional body.' The latter is often called 'the horse' in esoteric literature and is probably what he speaks of in speed trials: 'the horse in the cathedral painted black...no one knows where you are, standing in place...speed trials.'] he took apart his picture that wasn't right [this is a recurring theme in his lyrics, 'pictures stepped on lying on the floor of their room.' - Drive All Over Town and see his song 'Pictures of Me': 'saw you and me on the coin-op TV, frozen in fear...so sick and tired of all these pictures of me, completely wrong, totally wrong...everybodies dying just to get the disease.' he is getting out of formatory black and white thinking and entering the drinking of eternal memory (impressions/higher soma) that happens at 'judgement day' so to speak after death and is really solely oneself solely judging oneself as Meister Eckhart says Christianity actually teaches about the 'judgement day' (and was Winston's only escape from Big Brother in 1984: His own Memory that cannot be taken and that he can call his own). It can be started before death though: self remembering, that leads to the formation of a soul beyond this forgetfull and polarized black and white fragmented B-flick picture life. It is what Dennis Hopper was getting at in that movie where he painfully takes photo's of himself to see himself, the faces he wears, as he really is, looking at them. This is an outward act of an inward state.] pitch burning on a shining shoe ...or more likely: 'bitch burning on a shining sheet' (or even more likely he enunciated so it would mean both) [exoterically this means his physical body=pitch over his soul = the shoe...the body is a black and burning fodder or pitch for it, in comparison to it, just the wax over it. It's just like the egg white is nourishment to the yolk...and then the yolk is for the embryo/spirit. so also is the pitch to the shoe to the foot. Esoterically he is making fun of the veil over the real meaning of all his songs here: 'amore, amore!' ('bitch burning on a shining sheet')...he was always so much more about other business as well (and primarily - see his song 'the Biggest Lie'). So he sarcastically calls this front a 'bitch burning on a shining sheet,' a part of the black and white picture of him he is taking apart for you here, and then he says it is the 'primary maker' of other people's: 'the only maker that you want or knew' though he himself was 'disconnecting from the missing link' ie..mere animal existence that births people back into it's existence through their over attraction in the wrong way to: 'the only maker that they want to meet' = a bitch on a shining sheet' ] the only maker that you want to meet/want or knew/ want anew [our physical body is the alchemical 'philosophers stone' or 'maker' that must be transmorphed to crystallize the soul in us and it is what we 'knew of.' bleary eyed 'spiritualist' Christians are ignorant to have forgotten this thinking they can just get their souls saved.] a dying man in a living room/womb/wound [the soul in the body or the body in the soul, either way it's true it is 'a dying man in a living womb' until both are transformed - see the Aymara's teaching on this who live in Peru and are about the oldest living untouched ancient culture still alive. We are trapped in Samsara through the VeeJay repeater here until we awake... heh.] who's shadow paces the floor/fall/foal [this shadow is called 'fetch' by Irish Metaphysics (ha, ha, yes there is such thing: see Morganwg) and the psychic or moon body by Graeco-Roman and Egyptian Schools. it is often called the double or 'doppleganger' by German Tradition. it is tied in often to the greater daemon/angel presiding over ones lineage that comes for you at death and that one must get beyond through or be absorbed back into..."the double will come and collect my soul and encumber me.." - Angelene, P.J. Harvey. Of the foal: If he knew of Sumerian Occultism that treats of the body as the embryo of transformation drawn in the hieroglyphic of 'the foal' then he may be saying this. And the double paces the foal in us. the 'foal' is also this illusory physical passing earth and it's maker and continuater for men stuck here: a bitch burning on a shining sheet. This song appears to be a reference to that part of our life that is a 'crossing over' here and then onward..our higher selves or 'King,' and is also a caustic put down on the sociopathic behaviour of the imperious Nations of our age at the same time (which we live among). it is a summary it seems of both though he wavers more toward one or the other in different parts of the song I must say here, as I do on all Elliotts songs that: the key to understanding Elliott's songs lies in remembering he said his songs are at their best when it as though one part of himself is singing to another part of himself and you are let in. "Always got my way." and something about a "white father". either way, some words like this generally confirm what I am about to say about a 'white father and a wolf man,' being in and above fate, in us, as King's Crossing indicates. Everyone has their own interpretation but I'll tell you what Tom told us just before they performed this in Southern California: He said 'no one would believe me if I told them what people really try to do to me cause they haven't been through it so they aren't able to think it's real so I just sing about it with this song.' And this is certainly true because it's pretty clear we all got the lyrics wrong still in a lot of places on this post where it's important to get them right. Big Log (bad song title in my opinion - reminds me of the crapper, gtruno is hilarious on this thread) My interpretation is fairly different and 'sounds' alot closer to his enunciation in my opinion. Of course the song is about travel as he says so many of his are in his interviews and it is certainly about Love lost and the longing times amidst but it is also an autobiography of someone who was a Longer for the Otherworldly, a Mystic. As Plant said about Hammer of the Gods book: 'yeah, it would talk about some of our escapades but would it mention for example when Jones and I would go driving around all day looking for a book by Blavatsky? No it wouldn't. So it's kind of a caricature of us.' - paraphrase from an old interview [man why can't you find old interviews anymore..is there some place on the internet?]. I feel like Coast to Coast may be a Spirit singing to it's heavy/tired soul that doesn't want to come alive and help it's person so there is sort of a compromised negotion between the two then a stalemate reached between the two about their third wheel (the person) at the end and the Spirit begins to leave. I know it's a very egyptian way of looking at the makeup of man but I personally know Elliott was into some weird stuff. And if he is saying pushy preacher at the beginning and 'that's why' over such types at the end perhaps that is his way of saying there is no point in talking about the things he was truly interested in in that way cause it just doesn't work and is brain dead. [by Egyptian earlier I meant, for example here, that the Egyptians taught if your soul doesn't become an astral boat for your eternal spirit in this life before you die then there is no afterlife for you except some kind of being stuck regurgitating down here in the low, which 'is' hades/thuat]. And of course it's a song to his main old girlfriend too because you can detect the patterns but may have also been about Chiba who was said to come around and revitalize him with 'medications' [ie. 'circuit rider' sung in a way that sounds like he's saying cinco de maya too almost]. But there's definitely something 'other-wise' about it that lends me to sense a metaphysical side and not only girlfriend stuff. if this lyrical interpretation seems doubtful consider that Sam, his best friend, said all he can remember ever doing on his own tours with Quasi is picking up equipment and taking it to the next place but all he ever remembers doing all the time when touring with Elliott is reading Occult books with him. Reading Elliott's lyrics to 'A Living Will' should make this background abundantly clear. And in other songs Elliott says: 'I'm a crash credit card registered to 'Smith' not the name that you call me with.' 'why should you want any other when you're a world within a world.' And there is the red balloon he carries around in his video which he explained the meaning of.. And there is his interview where he says his best songs are like one part of him, in him, singing to another part in him. ..... My sister dated him for awhile in a sweet and innocent way and I knew a lot about him then and even briefly met him a little after that but was too scared to talk to him..or maybe it was like two brujo's circling each other like bulls, or like crabs in the sign of cancer, but giving each other friendly estimations, I don't know..it was a stalemate beyond the 'Hi' and assessment. People who say he gave off a blue aura you could almost sense and that he could make you feel like you were shot across to the other side of the room when he looked at you were right - that is what I felt then even before I knew other people said this about him. When he died I cried more then when my Grandfather died who was a great man - and I never even really knew him. But one sensed he was a human who went through a lot of suffering by people not like him but he always maintained himself like a gentleman to people in a BIG way to the end. Being that way would mean nothing if he didn't have something otherworldly in him because there are plenty of dead souled excellent smilers but he did and so that was why it means something important that he suceeded. One sensed at that time that he did and that he was, in a way beyond sense, out of this world before and after his death (btw..I lean toward thinking he was murdered by someone other then his girlfriend and that - almost certainly - it was not suicide). But, in any case, as the Sufi's say: 'Leave your life before your life leaves you.' and as the medieval author on King Arthur says: 'I won't say that he never died but that even before he had left this life he became immortal.' And as Elliott Smith says: 'Now I never leave my soul reposed although I'm going home...' One sensed this of Elliott to some degree and no doubt even David Bowie, also into strange practices, who was coming down to visit him at a certain point near the end having sensed something similar about him. [Bowie and Plant always show up like Gandalf's when people in the little hobbit world of music actually start doing something that connects with something bigger - for example Plant showing up at Ian Astbury's recording of Love before many yet knew of him etc.] So enough pre-ambling, here is my Interpretation. When listening very closely all of it sounds more like this then any of the variants proposed so far I am fairly strongly convinced. I wouldn't have realized the interpretation also if I hadn't have started hearing these anomalies in the sounds of the words of the lyrics too - and I only did so also while half asleep in that in-between state where you hear other-wise sometimes: inaudible: emtn (?) inaudible: Grdjf (?) The Fisher King is the symbol of true liberation by Heroicism attached to a Higher Order (as opposed to just money and guile). | I think the 'Viking' comment is not far off the mark only the Norse fought for hundreds of years against Magyar Vikings who were their staunch enemies so I would replace the word 'Viking' with 'Norse' and then you have a pretty accurate interpretation since it is true - as mentioned - that Led Zeppelin was influenced by Northern Myth (even today of all the awards Robert Plant could mention on his site they have recieved, he made special note of the one awarded to him by the king of Sweden..telling..)...'The Winds of Thor are blowing cold' may refer to this age of the twilight of the gods we are said to be in ('Kali' if you are Hindu) in Northern Myth, when the ancient ways will fade and all connection to what is Higher. and the next line I think he is actually singing 'they were a steel that's tried and true' meaning they are bearers of an ancient teaching, a path, a way few hold to anymore. If this is correct then it makes more sense of the next line, 'to carry news that must get through.' ..singing about 'bright steel' does not make sense of that next line after it as well as this interpretation here in my opinion. And then it continues: 'Enter the path where no one goes: they hold no quarter, they vote no quarter..' This is speaking of an uncompromising warrior like attitude in carrying out what they are bound to and it may refer to a narrow path, not giving quarter to the broad path of the world. I personally think it refers to the Fourth Way (see the tarot card - Page is very into tarot - where a fourth cup is appearing to the meditator out of the sky with three cups before him)also because at the very end Robert Plant says 'Oh Lord, give me quarter' And finally because they once said in an interview you have to have a method to do what they do and that they choose Crowle's though they said Gurdjieff's is just as valid.
