Red Hot Chili Peppers – Scar Tissue Lyrics 2 years ago
This song makes me think of a relationship that has ended where one person hurt the other badly, leaving them with "scar tissue, but that person then moved on with their life and has no idea how much that person is still hurting. I don't mean the pain of a breakup. We all know that eventually goes away. I mean the person hurt the other person inside. He hurt her self-esteem. Made her question and doubt herself. Made her forever change how she saw herself. And he is a sarcastic, know it all person. So, he will never see the scars he left. He would tell her to close her eyes and he would kiss her to make it better, if she could try to tell him. But that wouldn't make it better and because he's sarcastic, he knows this even as he's saying it. This is what she imagines him to say. And she knows that she is the only one who will see the scars. She will and the birds will - because the birds are vultures and they sense when someone or something is hurt.

She was just a young girl from Kentucky and when they met she fell all over herself to please him, make him happy, care for him, and love him. But she may as well have been in a bathroom stall because she was so alone and the pain hurt so bad it felt like she should be bleeding. She's not. There's no scar tissue for him to see. He moved on and found another southern girl who he whisked away from her parents at a young age and - again - just moved on.

She was soft-spoken because he silenced her (broken jaw reference).

They broke up in autumn - the fall - but she is determined to rise above the situation (make it to the moon if I have to crawl) and get over him. Because he will never know and couldn't see if he tried.

Train – Hopeless Lyrics 13 years ago
He killed himself within the last year and the weird thing is? This album was popular when we met. I played it over and over. And when I hear the songs on it, now or over the years, they've always reminded me of him. What I mean is that the lyrics have always been applicable to us. Then what's really weird is that when I look at alot of Train's other songs, the lyrics to those remind me of him or us also. (When I look to the Sky, Calling All Angels, This Ain't Goodbye, Etc). Especially now that he's dead. I can't believe he's dead.

I think someone writing those songs must have experienced a horrible loss in their life as well, either a death, divorce, or monumental break up because they just really speak to me.

I guess this really is my interpretation because this song is SO personal to me. For me, when I hear it, I think of a couple who that is in love. One or both of them had another partner (because of the secret midnight calls and anybody waiting at home). Anyway, their affair comes to an end...maybe not because they want it to, but it has to. Both people are sad, upset, confused (in & out, up or down, lost or found). One of them is being very distant. Maybe they've even moved away or live in another state. That person won't discuss anything and is basically unavailable. He or she is probably distancing himself because it hurts too much to talk to the other one and they both feel like it's a hopeless situation since they are tied up with these other people (their spouses?). When he says "Are you strong enough to tow the line..." that part - it's like he's saying 'ok one of us needs to take a stand if this relationship between us is going to happen at all. is it gonna be you or me that makes it happen?' In the end, he resigns himself to the fact that he will have to wait to see how it all plays out and if anyone's waiting at home (and if so, will the spouses work it out and stay together or will she come back to him?). He feels like he knows the answer - that he can never be with her, his soulmate, his real love, because of complications with his wife, among other major things. So he feels hopeless about the whole thing. In the end, he divorces his wife but so much time has passed that he can't find the other girl, and he ends up killing himself. Okay, I know that's not in the song, but that's basically what happened in my version of events. Unfortunately. Very depressing, I know.

Eagles – Desperado Lyrics 14 years ago
It's funny that everyone looks at this song (well, most people)as a song about a relationship. I don't think it necessarily has to be about a relationship but rather I see it as a comment on a person's general attitude towards life. Like one friend talking to another or an older person to a younger, giving them their observations about that person's behavior. The friend is trying to warn the person that if you live your life "on the fence", never committing to anything - whether that's a relationship, a family, a job, etc - you will never know true joy. While you may shield yourself from pain, by not getting 'involved', you are also not allowing yourself to experience happiness. In order to know happiness, you have to know pain ("you're losing all your highs and lows, ain't it funny how the feeling goes away?"). That is the result of a life lived with no strings attached. And how free are you really? You aren't - you think you are, but you're actually a prisoner of your own making. You built the walls, put up the cage, and threw away the key. So that's why at the end he says freedom is just some people talkin and that you should come down from your fence and open the gate. Get into life - live it. I could learn a thing or two from my own words here. I guess that's why I like the song.
