pretty sure it's "paths" not "pasts" - relating to the game of mahjong (real mahjong that is not the pair matching bastardisation of it)
when you play mahjong you can see within your hand of tiles different paths you available to you depending how the game progresses (luck of the draw) to achieve the highest scoring hand by the time someone is all out of tiles. |

Sounds like the guy is trying to let go of the hurt of previous relationship through seeing someone new. He's asking the new girl to give him love but can't tell if it's because he misses that so much from the other girl, or because he is finally feeling new passion with the new girl. Leaning towards the former since it simply seems a bit of a sad/tragic song. |

I have a story to go with the meaning of this song.. lol...
My boyfriend and I started off as friends even though he was always interested in me. I hated going a day without seeing him and always wanted to hug and talk to him, sometimes we kissed. But I kept saying I didn't want a relationship. I really had no idea what I was doing or where we were going with it. Then one night after he left this song came on shuffle after a few glum hours, I listened and it dawned on me that I was leading him on because I was scared of starting a relationship. I ran to his room (we lived in dorms) a few buildings away and banged on the door, about 3am, he was still awake... answered the door, nothing was said and I kissed him. We got together properly the next weekend and still together two years later.
I can see many parallels to me story in this song... for me to do what I did is very out of character as a shy person frightened of showing emotion. And that is how great this song is. |
