Liz Phair – Canary Lyrics 6 years ago
The thing I love about her song writing is that it is very rarely simple cut and dried.

For. Example
I write with a number 2 pencil This can either be talking about conformity or standardization.

Or I learn my name
Again
A name is something anyone would know but in context it could mean identity or role.

Almost every line of this song has at least two possible and although similar sounding (ie standardization or conformance) they give very very different meanings.

So depending on the interpretation you could have a woman on the edge of a nervous breakdown that is furious and is plotting revenge

Or a wan in a dead relationship with an inept hisnd and shes just tired and ready to give up but wants to provoke some type of shock to try to wake things up

Also the voice in the background I registered on the remastered version and noticed that alot of the shit that sort of lived under the main tracks on the original release are way harder to hear or are gone. I could barely hear it but I'd guess its liz talking with a recording mic on about something unrelated to the actual song. This happens more than once on this album and it's only pizza talking.

Liz Phair – Fuck or Die Lyrics 16 years ago
love the johnny cash nod.

I keep a Close Watch on This Heart Of Mine
I Keep my Eyes wide open all The Time
I Keep The Ends Out for The Tie That Binds
Because your Mine I Walk The Line

I Find It Very Very Easy To Be True
I Find Myself Alone When The Day Is Through
Yes, I'll Admit That I'm A fool For You
Because Your Mine I walk The Line

As Sure as Night Is Dark And Day Is Light
I Keep You On My Mind Both Day And Night
And Happiness I've Known Proves That It's Right
Because Your Mine I Walk The Line

You've Got A Way To Keep Me On your Side
You Give Me Cause For Love That I Can't Hide
For You I Know I'd Even Try To Turn The Tide
Because Your Mine I Walk The Line

I Keep A Close Watch On This Heart Of Mine
I Keep My Eyes Wide Open All The Time
I Keep The Ends Out For The Tie That Binds
Because Your Mine I Walk The Line

agree with all the posters...

i think its a dual meaning song.

Also, the line "i'll fuck you and your girlfriend too"... on the album (at least the one that i have, it sounds alot more like "i'll fuck you and your minions too".

Liz Phair – Shatter Lyrics 16 years ago
i think she has been been in a relationship with this guy and she's cheated on him repeatedly... then it hits her how badly she's been treating him and these references to driving cars, flying planes etc. are figurative references to doing the absolutely most crazy things to get his attention so she could make ammends.

Liz Phair – Rock Me Lyrics 16 years ago
i think this song isn't about an actual lover at all. I think this is a slap at the matrix / current generation of fans who heard this record and have no idea 'who liz phair is'. Cuz, quite frankly, she sounds pretty much like every other artist who has had songs written/produce by the infamous matrix (avril etc.). I actually didn't even recognize that the couple songs from this album that were played on the radio were in fact liz phair.

A big reason that i think this, is an acquaintance at a job that i used to have was talking about what a big liz phair fan he was (he was in his early 20's circa 2006) so obviously much too young to have listened to guyville, whipsmart of whitechocolatespaceegg when they were coming out. Basically the guy thought that liz phair was a brand new artist and no idea of what an iconic alternative figure liz is.

So, again, i think in this song, the 'fans come lately' are the lover she's talking about (or at least there is a big reference to that).

Liz Phair – Fuck And Run Lyrics 16 years ago
She knows what she wants, but she doesn't believe she's gonna get it. Kind of depressing. But some of my favourite lyrics ever, too

i would correct that statement to "She THINKS she knows what she wants..."

and yes, it is a depressing song - its kinda like the energizer bunner that just keeps mindlessly thumping away. She is wishful for letters and sodas - and old fashioned romantic gesture, she thinks that if she could somehow go back to a simpler time that love would be easier to figure out and maybe she could get out of this loop that she's stuck in.

The song is definately about her fucking and running - vs. the guy doing it. If you listen to her other songs you can get a picture painted that she had a really hard time with relationships and did some pretty shitty things to a number of people. Everybody is young and stupid, but, i think she had alot of pain because it was particularly difficult for her.

Liz Phair – Uncle Alvarez Lyrics 16 years ago
This song has two parts - the first part is very critical of uncle alvarez. A couple of people have said that Liz is saying that the family is ashamed of uncle alvarez because he told lies. I don't think that's why they are ashamed of him. Here is a story of a man who traded his role as a father and a husband for the role of a provider. He travelled the world doing amazing things - but, there is irony in this song, just like there is most liz phair songs - the reason she calls these "imaginary accomplishments" is not because they weren't real, but because how can anyone observe, or experience an accomplishment if they aren't there - i.e. if a tree falls over in a forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound? That's why she uses that description. Imaginary because Uncle alvarez was gone, and the accomplishments were always conveyed via phone or post cards.

Then the song starts becoming sentimental and more understanding of uncle alvarez's plight. She feels bad that he gave up so much to be a good provider. Basically a sweet, talented, hardworking man who made a choice that caused alot of loneliness and pain and this was the price that uncle alvarez had to pay.

The next part of the song she is addressing someone teetering on the brink of making the same choice as uncle alvarez and so the song becomes cautionary as she sings with the message that any accomplishment is meaningless if you don't have anyone to share it with.

Its really a sad song - one of my favorites for sure.
