It seems to me this song is about someone who starts off trying to stop drinking, but says he needs some help. Then... he abruptly gives up and starts drinking again. The cycle repeats, much like it does in real life.
I have to say the upbeat nature and humorous lyrics belie the depressing actual story. |

Definitely not a WWI reference - 1916 is the year of the easter rising in Ireland, when Ireland was still occupied by the British. It was an uprising that ended in the independence of the Republic of Ireland. Northern Ireland, however remained part of GB and that is why there were decades of oppression of catholics, terrorism by both catholics and protestants and plenty of British gov't wrongdoing. The song is saying current (90's) terrorism and oppression is "the same as 1916". |

The trouble is "Changing into my brother" isn't a line in the song. The line is "Changed the name of my brother". If you change the words to the song, heck, you can make the song say anything. |

I think people are oversimplifying the song. Each verse starts out nice and sweet "Your love is better than..." but ends with some darkness "Everyone here knows how to fight..." and "everyone here knows how to cry..." Love is complex, and this song hints at it. |
